I had a scan today and baby 1 is measuring at the right size but baby 2 is measuring 2 weeks behind and not much can been seen other than a small flutter of the heart beat has anyone else been in this situation any advise would be much appreciated..

First off congratulations. I'm an ivf grad with twins so know the emotions you'll be feeling right now. I've not been in exactly your shoes at 8 weeks but I would say at that early stage, with one or two babies on board, it is entirely possible for dates to be off with nothing to worry about. If you think they are essentially trying to measure a grain of rice floating around in a glass if water you can see how just a fraction of a millimetre out or the grain turns ever so slightly sideways and proportionately it will seem a lot smaller. The positive thing to focus on is that there were two heartbeats which if one was measuring at only 6 weeks is actually amazing because a lot of people would say it isn't a guarantee you'll see a heartbeat at six weeks. Try to remain focused on those two miracle fluttering hearts and don't think about the sizes right now. You've got a horrible four weeks to wait until the next scan and your beans need your positivity.
Good luck. I hope they both stick around for you xx

Hi thanks for your reply :) i am so happy to actually be pregnant but today im just a bag of nerves and emotions.. this is my second scan my first one at 6w3d picked up a baby 1's heartbeat, baby 2 had no heart beat and nothing that resembled a baby and no heart beat. Todays scan they found a heartbeat but couldn't really much. I am going for another scan in 2 weeks xx

Even better then. There has been growth in both of them. That is positive. And great news you get to see them again in another two weeks. I'm 36 weeks and all the way through one of mine has been a bit smaller which has only been an issue once in all that time (and that was then thought to be due to sonographer error when measuring which you'll discover is not an exact science). Good luck for the next scan but right now you are pregnant with twins :) x

I'm not in the exact same position as you, but I went for an early scan at just over six weeks because my last pregnancy was a molar pregnancy. My husband and I were very surprised to be told that there were two heartbeats. After the initial shock, we were overjoyed. Like you, however, I'm now finding the uncertainty of it all just terrible. We've scheduled a private scan for around nine weeks because we can't wait until 12 to know that everything is okay. In fact, I'm not sure how they can possibly expect women to not see those heartbeats every single day!

The most reassuring thing I've heard is that, once there is a heartbeat, the odds are on your side. It is more likely that everything will be okay than not. Also, millions of women have healthy pregnancies, so there's no reason you won't be one of them. I keep repeating these things. I hope your next scan goes well and both babies develop as hoped.

Mine isn't a 100% positive story but wanted to give you both sides. I was pregnant with identical twins. At 6 weeks was told one had a heartbeat and one didn't. A couple of weeks later baby one still had a strong heartbeat and baby two had a much weaker heartbeat. I was told baby two would probably not make it and could take baby one with it. Another two weeks later baby two had no heartbeat and has now 'disappeared' but baby one has continued to grow successfully and I am now 17 weeks. Hope all goes well with yours x
