approx 7 wks, no bleed/pain, empty sac but hormones at 1600 in bloods??

Hi Ladies,

I am writing this on behalf of my sister who has recently completed her first course in clomid. She has found she is pregnant with a digital test at home, they went to go for approx. 6/7 wk vaginal scan (15/04/15) all nurse could see was an empty sac. So they were referred to main hospital and she had another 2 scans yesterday (docs had to start from scratch cause fertility centre made no comms with hospital at all), internal and ultrasound and again it showed an empty sac. the doc didn't want to make a decision this week as he hadnt seen prev scans and he wanted to see her again next Friday for another scan. Her hormones in her bloods yesterday were at 1600 so she got to have some more done sunday. She got no pain or bleeding and still feels pregnant but what is really happening and could it just be that she isn't as far along as what any of them think she is?? She been trying to get pregnant for 5 years and its awkward as im pregnant with my second....any advice or anything would be appreciated! xx

I had an early scan at 7 weeks but my dates were out and they could only see an empty sac. I'd stopped taking the pill a couple of months before and my cycle was a bit unsettled still. Went back for s second scan a week later there was a tiny bean with a beating heart. I'm now 17+1.

I'm sure there is some hope (wrong dates etc). But I don't know much about hcg levels so can't comment on that. I do know unfortunately that early miscarriages can take a long time to happen. Both my sister and friend found no heartbeat at 7 wks and it too another 2+ for the bleeding to start as they opted not yo have a d&c. So I think as her sister you need to prepare for the worst and be as supportive as possible. You don't yet know the final outcome so I wouldn't speculate with her but to be honest it's not looking good if she is anyway sure of her dates. So sorry for her to be going through this after 5 yrs.

thank you ladies for your posts. She knows when her last period was but don't think she knows when she conceived for sure as her cycles have always been bit up and down. She could have cycle that's 35 days long and next month have one that's 40 days long etc. I don't know much about hcg levels either tbh but im hoping the bloods she has done tomorrow still show high levels as this would surely prove that she is still pregnant and that the little bean may just be too small yet. I think im clinging onto hope tbh worst of it Is that shed have closure by now if the fertility clinic has sent their scan notes and pics to hospital. doc said he could have made decision yesterday. I am trying to be supportive but at the same time I am trying to be happy etc about mine. its awkward and sensitive situation for us all. xx

When did she have a positive test? That hcg level is consistent with her being about 4 weeks pregnant I think, so two weeks from conception which would mean she's only had a positive test in the last couple of days.
If she was 4 weeks or less then it could be just too early to see anything, but that also depends on the size of the sac. If the sac measures later or she had her positive a couple of weeks ago, I'd say it's most likely to be bad news. I'm sorry. I had a missed miscarriage last year and eventually miscarried at 11 weeks. It is a horrible thing to go through. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's just too early for your sister.

Hi, I had a mc at 7 weeks that started with a heavy bleed and continued. Was scanned within an hour or so of bleed starting and all that was there was an empty sac. I was very certain of my dates though so knew immediately that it was bad news. There should have been a heartbeat or at least some outline of a baby at that stage but the pregnancy had never developed. I passed the sac the next day and continued to bleed for a week r so.
However for your sister it could be a very diff story. No bleeding or pain is a good sign and it could be that she just went for scan too early. Always best to wait until at least 8 r 9 weeks for a first scan because if dates are even slightly out it can cause a lot of unnecessary upset when only a sac is seen.
Basically her blood hcg levels that she's having done today should be double what they were 48hours previously. If they double it is a good sign that the pregnancy is progressing normally. If they only increase slightly/not at all or have begun to drop it would indicate that a miscarriage is inevitable. The level itself means very little as there can be huge differences in one persons hcg level at 7 weeks and another's. It is the change over a 48hr period that indicates what's happening. Also a scan one week later should show a difference.
Hope this helps and fingers crossed all goes well for her. The waiting is terrible and I was so glad I didn't have that as I knew straight away it was bad news for me.
