Daggers in my hips at night

At night my hips seem like they're trying to kill me - especially the left one. It's like someone's stuck a danger in it! Was just looking at maternity support belts but I'm confused... What can i do to alleviate this pain? I'm 19 weeks. Not bought a maternity pillow yet but am looking into that too... Advice needed!

Try sleeping with a firm/foam pillow between your knees. I started having that pain around then too - the pillow is your friend! I think it's something to do with the the relaxin hormone and loosening joints, which is exacerbated when you lie on your side.

I'm now 31 weeks and have to sleep propped up, otherwise I get awful headaches! The joys of pregnancy :)

I get this too and second the suggestion of a pillow/scatter cushion between the knees. It makes all the difference.

Go and see a physiotherapist! Can't recommend it enough :-)

Thanks ladies! Any of you splash out on a proper pregnancy pillow? Just filled out my self referral form for physio so hopefully that won't take too long... Didn't feel like this til much later in last pregnancy.

I've managed to alleviate the same problem a fair bit by

  1. Putting a folded up duvet on top of our mattress (which is memory foam) - the extra padding seems to help my hips.
  2. I also use my pregnancy dream genii pillow although to be fair a normal pillow will probably be as good.
  3. Seeing a physio. I mentioned the pain to my midwife and she referred me straight away. After the first session I noticed a difference. She also suggested the duvet thing so worth trying I would say. My pelvis wasn't aligned correctly so she sorted that out. I've had 2 sessions so far and have exercises to do on a gym ball. Definitely helping because I also have some pain when walking etc

Brilliant thank you. I hope I don't have to wait too long to see the physio! In agony today - everything is aching.
