Scan.. Too early to see heartbeat?!

I'm after some advice.. Help..

Basically I'm pregnant (well.....)

I had my first missed period on the 10th March, positive pregnancy test on 11th March. All fine. Went to doctors booking in appointment and said my last period wasn't normal so he wanted to get us a scan asap. This was today.

I was expecting to be around 8/9weeks going by my last period (the dodgy one). However today they could see the sac and node as she kept calling it but no heartbeat.

In my notes its written as 'sac 30mm node 3mm (no feral heartbeat seen). They have booked us back in on the 27th April for another scan and see epu.
No one explained anything to us so we are in the dark.

Does this mean baby stopped growning or I am early?

I could potentially be around 6weeks as it has been 5 weeks since I missed my period in March.

Symptom wise, my breasts hurt when I first found out nothing for a couple of weeks now. No sickness (when I first found I felt sick but that could have been in my head).. Tiredness (but I have a 3 year old too) and just some bloated ness.

Can anyone help?!

Don't worry. I had a light bleed, went for scan at epu and there was sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat.
Went back two weeks later and baby was definitely there!
I'm now 27 weeks :)

Meganlilly89 · 16/04/2015 17:46

That's positive thank you! Smile I guess I'm just worried because I didn't Understand the measurements. The women doing the scan didn't seem bothered x

Meganlilly; they should have been able to see a heartbeat if you're 8 weeks along, but possibly not quite yet at 6 weeks. Depends a lot on the quality of the scanner, though. If you're not sure on dates, and they're not worried, then just wait a couple of weeks and see how the next one goes!

Meganlilly89 · 16/04/2015 18:36

She didn't say how far along i could be. Just those measurements and that was it, but I don't know what they mean. I guess I will have to wait until 27th & keep my fingers crossed

Sorry, would love to help, but i'm afraid the measurements mean nothing to me; what i know is from my own history of miscarriage and scans at various points in successful & failed pregnancies...

Meganlilly89 · 17/04/2015 22:21

Trying to be positive. Only thing that is playing on my mind is I did a clear blue digital test when I missed my period so 5 weeks ago and it said 2-3 weeks..

Grantaire · 17/04/2015 22:29

A CB Digital test showing as 2-3 weeks would have made you 4-5 weeks pregnant. As you are now 5 weeks past that point, you would have expected to be around 9 weeks now. I am afraid that I would personally be prepared for the worst. I have been there and have had it go both ways. If you hadn't had such a clear positive test 5 weeks ago, I might have said differently, but sadly I do think you should be prepared. I desperately hope I am wrong.

Meganlilly89 · 17/04/2015 22:36

I think I knew before the scan that something wasn't right.. All I can do is wait and see.. Thank you x

Poor you.

I had bleeding in the early weeks and scans for both my pregnancies and the waiting was so hard.

I hope there's good news for you.

Though if sadly not, there's always lovely shoulders to sob on here and people to talk to.

buttercupbear · 18/04/2015 12:18

The CB tests are notorious for being inaccurate on dates, so I wouldn't worry just yet x

Meganlilly89 · 18/04/2015 16:37

I'm still driving myself crazy.. No pains.. No bleeding. Is it possible i conceived two weeks before taking my pregnancy test, therefore getting a 2-3 on the clear blue and would also make me 6/7 weeks pregnant now? Date from lmp would make me two weeks further gone. I don't really understand dates etc as with my first I didn't have an early scan. Kind of wish I didn't have this one now x

Also the last two days again I have gone back to feeling very sick but could be nerves x

Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period. Not the missed one. On average you will ovulate and concieve 14 days after that. A CB digi taken 15 days after that or once your period is late will show probably 2-3 or maybe 1-2 weeks. Either would be normal. 6 weeks after the first day of your last period, or 2 weeks after the day you expected your period, there might be a heart beat on a scan. IIRC the earliest it can sometimes be seen in 5weeks 4days. But if you ovulated a little later then at 6 weeks there will not yet be a HB. The 3 EPUs I've used recommend not scanning before 7 weeks due to that (unless an ectopic or other emergency is suspected). And all the early scans I have had were internal. They said it would be impossible to check abdominally. Was yours internal?

If you are now 9 weeks and there is no HB then you should probably prepare for the worst I'm afraid. If sadly you have miscarried it's quite common to continue to feel pregnant. I did.

Grantaire · 18/04/2015 17:00

Pregnancy is dated as 38 weeks from conception which is around the time you ovulate. In an average woman this happens on day 14 of her cycle.

Once upon a time you didn't have scans but generally women seemed to have a baby around 40 weeks after her last menstrual period so that's how it is dated historically. Actually though, women don't fall pregnant until they ovulate and that (again in the average woman) is 2 weeks after the date the pregnancy is actually counted from.

So imagine the average woman has a period start on January 1st. She doesn't actually conceive until January 14th when she releases an egg and has unprotected sex. She misses her period on the 28th and takes a pregnancy test and confirms that she is indeed pregnant. On that day that she takes the pregnancy test, she is considered to be 4 weeks pregnant despite conception happening only 2 weeks previously. This is just an average woman and there are variations.

Clearblue digital tests measure from conception so if it tells you that you're 2-3 weeks pregnant it actually means 2-3 weeks from egg meeting sperm. The NHS would refer to you as 4-5 weeks pregnant at that point.

I wish I could agree with buttercup that they're notoriously inaccurate but actually, what they are is a rough guide. To show 'pregnant 2-3 weeks' the test has to pick hcg between 200 and (I think) 2000. There are variations between women but it covers a general range. If it was picking up 2-3 weeks pregnant, you were extremely likely to be 4 weeks pregnant at least. Certainly, the earliest you'd expect a clear and positive pregnancy test from Clearblue would be at 10 days post ovulation or thereabouts. That's the very earliest really and unlikely. You'd really expect to be 9 weeks now. Even if it was inaccurate for actually dating, it was picking up pregnancy so you were probably at least 3 weeks, most likely between 4 and 5.

If you were 6-7 weeks pregnant now, a pregnancy test 5 weeks ago would have been negative. You wouldn't have conceived at that point realistically.

I wish I could bend the numbers to fit for you.

That all makes complete sense. Trying to think positive as that is what family keep telling me to do. Iv just never been through anything like this x

OP posts:
Grantaire · 18/04/2015 17:13

Agree with Dixie. Checking your hcg levels will give you an idea of what's happening. Ideally, you want 2 readings a couple of days apart to tell you if the level is normal and rising.

mandy214 · 18/04/2015 17:15

I really want to be positive for you but can only give you my experience. I had a bleed early on and had a scan at 5 + 4. They couldn't see a heart beat but told me I was having twins and the sacs were 10mm and 9mm.

Possibly if your sac is measuring 30 mm with no heartbeat, it might be a bad sign.

Having said that just hold in there, the human body has a way of surprising you. Good luck x

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 18/04/2015 18:42

What was abnormal about your last period?
I would say it doesn't look good. I'm sorry. Five weeks on from your missed period, you should be about 9 or 10 weeks. Did they tell you what gestation it was from the length? 30mm is between 9 and 10 weeks so they should have been able to see the heartbeat if all was well.
When you are next scanned, they will either confirm it as a loss or it will somehow show something completely different. When I was in your position, I assumed the worst as I couldn't find any way that it could be ok given the measurement.
If it is a loss, they will then provide you with information about what happens next as you will have some options. If you wanted to take a look at that information now, the Miscarriage Association is really helpful, as are the miscarriage boards on here.
I'm sorry not to be more positive. Thanks Thanks

Meganlilly89 · 18/04/2015 18:56

My period in feb was 7 days late and then It was quite light. I did tests back then and all negative but my gp wanted to get me scan asap incase it was anything different.
Nope they didnt give me any dates, all she said was could you be earlier than 12 weeks and I said yes as that wasn't a lie, I told her in brief and she just said I can see there is definitely a pregnancy in the womb but maybe too early to see anything. Will get you booked back in. The measurements I got from notes a piece of paper she had put in there x
