Possible IUGR - what size was your baby?

This is my 2nd pg.
To put things into context I had quite an eventful 1st pg. Bleeding throughout which was suspected to be coming from the placenta. No extra scans though and was midwife led. Had an EMCS as baby was distressed. DS was born weighing 6lb 3oz so I didn't think he was particularly small. I did later read in my notes that I had a small placenta and a thin cord. DS also has hypotonia and hypermobility syndrome which we don't yet know the reasons for.
Went for my consultant booking appt today & was told that my 20wk scan would be carried out at the hospitals fetal medicine unit by a specialist and that I would be having growth scans at 32 & 36 wks!
When I questioned the consultant he said it was because DS was small. Is 6lb 3 that small?! I am only 4ft 11 and small build so probably normal for me.
Would be interested to hear the experiences of anyone else who has been monitored for IUGR in pg, especially with regard to how big your babies were x

Mine were 5lb 2, 4lb 11 & 6lb 2. I was monitored for IUGR for all 3DC. They were less concerned about DC3 but since I'd had 2 small babies previously they were being cautious. I agree with you that 6lb 3 doesn't seem small. I was led to believe that 2.5kg or more is the magic weight whereby a baby is no longer classed as small but I can't remember what that is in lbs & oz.

I actually found the extra scans a bit of a bonus, rather than being too worried about them but possibly because my consultant was quite reassuring about the whole thing.

louiseee123 · 10/04/2015 10:45

My LB was 5lb14oz and this was also aparently boderline for being small so possible IUGR, i didn't know this at the time though!

With this one i'm consultant-led at my last scan she was showing on the 50% and approx 2lb9oz at 28 weeks, so i still don't know maybe we just have small babies!

RhiannonElward · 10/04/2015 11:10

I've had a 6lb2 and a 6lb3 and at only 5'0 I think that's what was expected, although maybe they're concerned because of the size of your placenta and cord instead? My placenta was huge (and in the wrong place) so I didn't have issues there. Ask more questions by all means, but extra scans are always a good thing and if all is well you've at least had extra reassurance :)

Piffyonarockbun · 10/04/2015 14:40

my first was 5lb 12oz with suspected iugr. i was scanned the day before my due date due to concerns over my size (was barely showing). i was induced the next day. DD is still on the small side but im only 5'3 myself so its to be expected Grin .

My ds1 was 3 days late and only5lb6oz so this time I'm being ministered and getting the extra scans. What they have determined this time is that due to my ds1's consistent growth ( he's always been between the 9th and 25th centime line) it wasn't due to the placenta not doing it's job, he was small and was meant to be that way as according to consultant those that were born small due to an under functioning placenta would shoot up the weight scale in their first initial years where as those meant to be small stay on their line and grow constantly if that makes sense.
I'm 29 w and scan in a few weeks to check size of this one.

WillowB · 10/04/2015 20:27

Thanks for your replies. It seems that DS is on the larger side of small then! I imagine it must be something to do with the other issues I had. I'm certainly not complaining about the extra scans, that's definitely a bonus.
I will ask my midwife if there are any specific concerns when I have my next appt.

Mine was 5lb14 (2.66kg) at 37w. Not small enough to tick the IUGR box though, and looking at her parents, entirely appropriate! Boys are expected to be bigger though, and looking at the UK WHO growth charts, the 9th centile at term is just shy of 3kg (6lb 3 is about 2.8kg), so technically he was a bit small. Given your size, it sounds reasonable - but there were placental issues so I suspect they are just being cautious :)

NickyEds · 11/04/2015 20:13

My ds was 6lb 5oz and I'm having extra growth scans this time, mw said that they do it for any pregnancies following a below 10th centile birth. I'm very worried about it mainly as ds was predicted from scans to be 7-8lb at 30 weeks, born at 6lb 5oz then shot up to the 50th-70th centile by the time he was 5/6 weeks old- as wowiesis says, it seems like he was genuinely born too small. No one mentioned his size at the time though.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 11/04/2015 20:16

My DS was suspected IUGR. I was induced before my EDD after several growth scans, and he was born 38+4 weighing 6lb 11oz. So totally average! And only 2oz less than DD who arrived on her own steam at 38+6

MadameJosephine · 11/04/2015 20:18

How many weeks were you when you had your first? 6lb 3 at 38 weeks would be above the 10th centile which is the cut off for IUGR but at 42 weeks would definitely be below the 10th

brimfullofasha · 11/04/2015 20:20

My DC1 was IUGR and was 5lb9 at 39 weeks. I was induced due to slow growth and low fluid. His growth slowed to nothing after about 33 weeks. My OH and are tall and DC has short up the growth charts. This pg I'm having extra scans and baby is small but growing.

Sleepybunny · 11/04/2015 20:50

My DD1 was born at 36 weeks (induced due to apparent lack of growth) she was 5lb 1 and is still on the 9th centile at 2 years old. I'm pregnant with DC2 so a bit anxious about what will happen this time. Although I am tall but have a low BMI so wondering she was meant to be small too, like the others have said.

Wheelerdeeler · 11/04/2015 20:54

Ds was born by section at36 w as he had stopped growing. I had been well monitored & several growth scans. He was 4lbs3oz.

PandaNot · 11/04/2015 20:59

Ds was 5lb 10 born at 42 weeks. They said he had IUGR, due to undiagnosed pre eclampsia. Had monitoring with dd who was 7lb 10 and absolutely fine. Sounds like they just want to check everything is ok because of a combination of things.

Kewrious · 11/04/2015 21:16

5lb 5oz at 38+2. I am Asian and quite short. My hospital wasn't concerned. DS who is now 3 is fine and healthy and full of beans. I was briefly pregnant again before miscarrying at 14 weeks, but at my midwife's appointment I was led to believe that I would be given frequent growth scans as a consequence of my last pregnancy. DS was 2.52 KG btw, so I think 5lb 5oz is indeed the magic mark.

Kewrious · 11/04/2015 21:18

To add to the above, there was never any mention of IUGR either before or after birth. I was told that he was just a bit small for his gestational age. I was born weighing 4lb 12 oz at 36 weeks and my sister 5lb at 37. I suspect we just have small babies (and we are quite vertically challenged as a family anyway).

worriedmum100 · 12/04/2015 16:44

DS was 5lb 15 at 40 weeks and I'm being monitored this time and will have growth scans. DS had no other issues though and is now about average weight and height at nearly 4. His size wasn't picked up during my pregnancy or mentioned at birth. I looked huge and bump was the right size. I'm 5 ft 4 and have quite a small frame/hips so I've always put it down to the fact I wasn't built for big babies but I'm probably totally wrong and this one will be a whopper!
