Heartburn

Any of you lovely ladies experiencing terrible heartburn?
I'm 27 weeks and its really painful! I've got Gaviscon but they don't seem to do much and they taste horrible!
I've been eating natural yoghurt to try to soothe it, a friend of mine recommended getting omeprazole from the doctor - but I'm not sure wether to or not, get worried about tablets in pregnancy!
What are you taking for heartburn? If left untreated is it dangerous? I've never had heartburn before!

A MW recommended bitter lemon to me - was a long time ago but I have a vague recollection of giving a little old lady the evils because she took the last bottle from the shop one NYE!

Wow - I wish I'd known you could get stuff on prescription for heartburn when I was pregnant. Didn't even occur to me! I found ice lollies helped a bit.

Gaviscon double action in the bright pink bottle is the only thing that works for me. It tastes nice too (minty).

Ive been prescribed some acid reducers to get mine under control. But have managed to wean myself off them with the help of almond milk, I've been having a glass every time I eat something and it's helping tons. I hate milk of any kind so am having the chocolate version.

2 weeks here and also experiencing lava-like insides! Would definitely recommend the coldest milk you can possibly drink and ginger too :)

*22 weeks! Darn keyboard!

You poor thing, I had raging heartburn with DS. I couldn't sleep fully lying down for months. I had the extra strength Gaviscon which I practically put a straw in and carried around with me.

Nothing seemed to work for me so no advice to offer, just very sincere sympathies, it's worth it in the end.

35 weeks here and feeling like my oesophagus might just burn it's way out of my chest, especially at night. Sparkling water, ginger tea and Rennies are helping a bit.

comeagainforbigfudge · 23/03/2015 21:32

Aw see I must be a total wuss. I just couldn't handle the pain anymore. Plus I was concentration was starting to go in work. (And when you need to calculate drugs etc, it's rather important!)

But I mainly just chanced it with the practice nurse whilst I was there Grin

Sparkling water made me worse and milk only had a good effect for about half an hour. The ranitidine is working so far though (claps hands frantically)

Omeprazole is brilliant. I took two a day during my second pregnancy.

However, during my first pregnancy I stuck with Gaviscon Advance but it was useless, I was even trying to neck it in labour but the midwife was shocked at the volumes I was glugging and confiscated it. One of the best things about the birth (apart from meeting DS) was that immediately afterwards I could down gallons of water without heartburn.

Strawberry gaviscon and Mars chocolate milk drink. I had appalling heartburn 20-26 weeks which seems to have subsided... For now....

gingerfluffball · 24/03/2015 05:04

I lived off Gaviscon around the 27 week point when it was really bad. The aniseed flavour is vaguely better than the peppermint but both are awful. I read somewhere to try coconut water which I did in between bouts of Gaviscon, and actually it worked better than expected.

Glad the ranitidine is working for you OP! Smile

Teladi · 24/03/2015 09:18

Mine was not as bad as yours but when I saw this come up in Discussions of the Day, I had a vivid flashback to swigging Gaviscon Double Action out of the bottle at 3:30am. Grin

I hope things will be better with the ranitidine!

weeblueberry · 24/03/2015 09:40

Strawberry gaviscon and Mars chocolate milk drink.

You get STRAWBERRY GAVISCON?? Why has no one told me this? Sad

KatoPotato · 24/03/2015 09:47

My people! I had to sit on my heels ar preggo yoga because the downward dog was reducing me to tears!

I have a bottle of gaviscon at my side at all times, but just wanted to tell you what my DR said about milk. While it is a very tempoary soother, it actually creates further acid in the stomach leading to... heartburn

TiedUpWithString · 24/03/2015 09:59

Hello! Long term reflux sufferer and I can vouch for omeprazole. However when pg I first started getting it and took one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and it worked a treat. Sadly it has no effect post-birth! It surprisingly pleasant to drink and totally drug free if you're determined not to have anything prescribed.
