I had my 16 week MW appointment. Pretty routine, blood test results, urine sample checked and further appointments discussed. She then said it wasn't hospital policy nor should we attempt if I'm a worrier as a heartbeat isn't always found but if I wanted her to try she would. I'm fairly relaxed so said yes. We then heard a beautiful strong heartbeat. I don't think its the norm to try and hear it but certainly a nice feeling! Smile

What did she use to detect the heartbeat? I've got my 16 week MW appointment tomorrow.

I had my 16 week appointment yesterday and was not expecting to get to hear the heartbeat but we did! Grin midwife even told us to record it. Was so reassuring that little spud is doing okay.

I had a consultant appointment yesterday (16 weeks) and I heard the heartbeat there! It is lovely and very reassuring isn't it!

I'm not sure what you call the machine they use I'm sorry. Ah wish I'd recorded it! Didn't even think to do that! All the best for your appointment but remember its not always possible so be relaxed about it.

It's awesome to hear the heartbeat!

She will have used a handheld Doppler machine. It's no longer policy in most NHS trusts to use them; it is notoriously difficult to find a heartbeat, especially early on, and it can cause a lot of anxiety if the mw can't find it and further scans etc are needed.

Just don't be disappointed if it isn't offered to you.

I had mine today too and heard the heartbeat! So strong! It was lovely to hear for the first time.
