baby has a big belly

hi everyone!

I've just come back from my 20wk scan and the sonographer mentioned that all measurements are in the middle of the normal range except for baby's stomach, which is at the higher end (but still within the normal range)

a quick Google search suggests I'm going to be giving birth to a big baby - does anyone else have experience of this?

I was told the same thing last week at a 34 week scan to check my placenta site. I was advised to have a glucose tolerance test to check for gestational diabetes based on what they saw on the scan, has this been suggested to you?

LittleMiss77 · 20/02/2015 14:20

No - the sonographer just said that the midwife will start to measure me at my next appointment and if she is concerned will look to send me back for a growth scan at a later date.

I had this with dd. At 20 weeks, all measurement in normal range, abdomen at the top end of average.

Caused no problems at all. She was born 8 dates late weighing 8lb 2oz. A lovely home birth. Dd is my 2nd, my ds was 14 days late, weighing in at 8lb 11oz.

Dd is now a lovely, lively 4 year old (who just happens to have a bit of a tummy on her - gorgeous).

Interesting i had very similar.
What were babys measurements?

I dont understand how big belly = big baby as surely big head is worse.
The sonographer only mentioned in passing.
Im not getting extra checks.
The baby is in breech position though so wondering if that would make it bigger
However i do have pcos so am booking gtt for 28w.

Dc1 was 7lb 10 i think she just had long femur on scan.
Also i know they are measuring me against a date thats 4 days out (ivf date is earlier) which would mean babys tummy is actually even bigger but then its other measurements become higher too.

DD's abdomen was bigger than the rest of her and my 20 week scan showed that this one has a larger abdomen then everything else too! DD was born 6 days overdue at 7lbs 12oz perfectly healthy and has been on the 50th centile since birth so it definitely hasn't caused any problems.

Gemzybelle · 20/02/2015 15:03

SIL was told exactly the same thing, made to have GTT, growth scans etc.

Baby was born three days ago and is a gorgeous 8lb3 little girl. Don't worry Flowers

Yes. Scan at 36 weeks and my dd's tummy was so big the computer couldn't cope and the sonographer had to work out the measurements on paper. Ds was born at 36 +6 and weighed 8lb 10th. Relieved he didn't say in much longer. It was a very straightforward birth. As my midwife said, tummies are squishy. Now if it had been a big head on the 99.99th centile ...........

hideandsqueak · 21/02/2015 23:08

I was told at my 20 week scan that baby had a large belly and I would have to have a Gtt.

I worried about it for 8 weeks and cut out sweet stuff but then after all that Gtt was clear.

DS was born at 6lbs11

Cisforcat · 22/02/2015 08:23

I really wouldn't worry. My 20 wk scan has shown my baby is over average for everything ( legs are off the scale as is overall size) and they aren't worried. GTT was clear and no one has shown any concern since. I'm now 34+ 4.

They also told me my dd was going to be big and at 15 days late was 7lb15 so not big at all!

You can never tell and they catch up most of be time anyway so panic not.

LittleMiss77 · 22/02/2015 08:34

Thanks for the reassurances everyone x

I was told the same at my 20 week scan. Haven't been made to have GTT test though. DS was 9lb 2 so expecting another whopper.

wildpoppy · 22/02/2015 18:05

At a 36 week scan I was told this and got v worried. Told it was just within realm of normal but def on big side. Had another scan at 40 weeks ish because of this I think (hard to remember). Ds was two weeks late at 10lb. Is still a big boy - now 2 and bigger than most his age. But belly totally in proportion.

butterfly86 · 22/02/2015 20:57

I had tons of growth scans with dd due to previous mc's and her abdominal measurement was always big I was worried but my consultant just said the baby has a fat belly it's fine was probably all the cookies I was eating she was born just over 2 weeks early weighing 7lb 3 so not huge and doesn't have a fat belly now :)

berrypicking · 24/02/2015 13:58

I was just told this too at scan but she didn't seem concerned. His belly was right at the top of the normal range as well. Will see how it goes, last ds was born 7lbs 8oz so not big so hoping this one wont be too much bigger!
