6 Weeks Pregnant - advice

Hi people :) I'm completely new to the site but I've been seeing you all giving great advice so I decided to register as googling symptoms is the worst thing to do - just working me up!

Anyway, my story, found out I was pregnant a couple of weeks ago, it's my first pregnancy.. I have Been having very mild period like cramps but only yesterday I experienced bleeding, not like a period but just when I wiped, it later went to a brown colour and faded, I went to my local A&E who said I could only be fit in for a scan on Thursday morning (tomorrow) and was told to go home and stay in bed. Ended up paying for a private scan last night and they confirmed I'm 6 weeks and 2 days so a little younger than we expected but everything was healthy and the little heart was bopping away. I slept easy last night until I woke up this morning to more red bleeding with small clots.
I'm probably just panicking and the pregnancy unit said it's more than likely your body getting rid of old blood, etc and preparing to accommodate a baby, it could also be implantation because of how early I am or it could be a period again as it's around the time I menstruate, doesn't always mean miscarriage.
Just holding tight and trying to relax until the scan in the morning. I know I had one last night and everything was ok so I'm more than likely working myself up...
Just wanted to see if anyone else has had the same kind of symptoms? :) - Hannah xx

Hi Hannah,

Sorry you're going through this at the moment, playing the waiting game is really horrible. I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks with my first pregnancy last year, which progressed from spotting to full-on heavy bleeding with terrible pain within a couple of days. Prior to that I'd had no spotting.

I'm currently 10.5 weeks pregnant again and playing the waiting game myself. This time round I had light spotting pretty much every day between 6-9 weeks. It was mainly discoloured discharge, light-brown to pinky in colour. But I also had a couple of bouts of more pink-red, which made me think it was all ending at the time. I had an early scan at 6 weeks and 2 days, which showed a heartbeat. The spotting continued and another scan at 8 weeks and 2 days showed good growth and a fast, strong heartbeat. They couldn't see any reason for the spotting and said not to worry unless it became heavy or I had proper pain.

Interestingly, another thing EPU at the hospital told me was that they conducted their own survey into spotting/bleeding in pregnancy a few years ago, and they found that 4 out of 5 ladies who they saw with this symptom had a continuing pregnancy. This made me feel a lot better as it sounds a lot better than what you read online. (I assume when they do these surveys they don't count people who are bleeding because they are actually miscarrying right then and there).

So spotting/bleeding in pregnancy is really common it seems. I posted a similar post to yours previously and loads of women on here replied to say that they'd experienced spotting and bleeding and continued to have a healthy pregnancy. However, obviously we worry it can go either way, and that is why it is so horrible having to wait! But seeing a heartbeat is a good sign so just try to take it as easy as you can and be kind to yourself. That's what I'm trying to do, I know it is easier said than done ...

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for replying, sorry to hear about your miscarriage, keeping my fingers crossed for you with this one :) to be honest from what I've read from what other people have put aswell it seems like it can go one way or the other. Ahh trying to keep positive anyway!

Hi Hannah,

I had period-like cramps, pinky-red spots and brown blood clots a bunch of times betwee 6-8 weeks and went for numerous early scans. All fine (I'm now at 12+ weeks) and I was also told it was probably my body getting rid of old blood - maybe even from an implantation bleed. I was told that if you have a heartbeat on a scan at 6+ weeks there is less than a 3% chance of having a mc. I hope that's reassuring? I found it really reassuring because I thought that up to 12 weeks there was quite a high chance of mc, and less than 3% seemed like good odds to me!

Fingers crossed for you. Let us know how your Thursday scan goes, if you feel like it.
