Did anyone have a scan at 16 weeks?

Someone I know had their 12 week scan, and has their 20 week scan booked. They are also having a scan tomorrow, at 16 weeks, on the NHS.

Isn't that unusual?
Or is there some reason I am missing?

Maybe they had bleeding, or have a history you don't know about?! Not too unusual!

blackwidow74 · 06/01/2015 19:10

If they are consultant led then it's not unusual to be scanned more ... perhaps an issue on the 12 week scan needs to be looked at ... perhaps her dates were out and the extra scan is her 12 week? Could be a number of reasons really!

PotteringAlong · 06/01/2015 19:11

Ivf pregnancy? Twins? Problem detected at 12 week scan?

Bippidee · 06/01/2015 19:18

They may be under consultant care or partaking in studies. I had 7 scans with DD, I was under 2 clinics and doing 2 studies.

Swanny84 · 06/01/2015 19:21

I was scanned at 8, 12, 16, 20, 32 weeks with my first 10 years ago as had 5 miscarriages
2nd baby I caught slapped cheek syndrome so was scanned almost every week between 19 and 30 weeks to check heart defects.
Fair to say I am so grateful we have nhs.

I had a 16 week scan as part of my consultant led care. In my case it was because of a Nuchal tube defect in a previous pregnancy but I don't think it's unusual to have more scans if you're consultant led.

Catypillar · 06/01/2015 19:39

I had a 16 week scan because I'm on medication that can cause neural tube defects.

nslw · 06/01/2015 22:09

Ah I see thanks.
Why would you be consultant led? Sorry I am a bit clueless about this stuff!

I had a 16 week and a 32 week (I think) because I had been exposed to parvovirus (5th disease/slapped cheek) in my workplace (school) and I had never had it so was a risk to baby.

Also, I have a slight heart defect and so was consultant led for most of pregnancy.

You don't get pics at those scans though Wink

neversleepagain · 06/01/2015 22:21

I was scanned at 16 weeks (10 scans on total), consultant led care, twins.

leanne963 · 06/01/2015 22:55

Just wondering, don't take this the wrong way, but why don't you just ask your friend why she is getting a scan at 16 weeks?! Cause none of us can give any answers! This isn't meant so sound blunt, just wondering!?

blackwidow74 · 06/01/2015 23:00

I'm consultant led this time as my last preg ended with my son being stillborn due to hypercoiling of the cord and the placenta failed ... There are a number of reasons you may be referred to consultant care

nslw · 07/01/2015 00:06

Hi Leanne, I haven't had a chance to see my friend in person yet and I don't really know how to ask it over text- I'd hate to be insensitive if something is wrong :( as I said, I know so little about pregnancy and I guess I just wasn't sure if this was something to be worried about. Goodness knows she's got enough on her plate without me upsetting her :(

I think you should keep your nose out tbh and let her tell you if she wants.

nslw · 07/01/2015 06:48

Thanks bumwad! As I was saying yet I haven't had a chance to see her yet and was more worrying that at 16wk scan was a sign of bad news and thinking whether I should try and get down to visit her asap.

As there was a suspicion my DS would be severely disabled/deformed due to some medication I'd taken, I was scanned at 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks until they gave him the all clear.

This time around I've had scans at 12 and 20 weeks but also have to have 28 and 34 week ones due to potential IUGR

It's most likely due to concerns over the baby!

Number3cometome · 07/01/2015 13:17

With DC2 I had scans at 8,12,20 then scans every 2-3 weeks until 37 weeks (baby born 38 weeks) due to eclampsia with seizures during my first pregnancy.

Expecting the same this time around.

I am consultant only care.

BitchPeas · 07/01/2015 13:21

I'm consultant led and I also have a nural tube defect in previous pregnancy so I was scanned at 7,10,12,16,20 and 22 weeks.

BadtzMaru · 07/01/2015 13:25

I had one at 17 weeks due to the test results coming back high risk for Downs and I was deciding whether to proceed to amnio or not. There were no physical signs of it in the baby so I decided not to and thankfully all was fine in the end.

Gudgyx · 07/01/2015 13:40

Is it maybe a private gender scan she is having?

Gudgyx · 07/01/2015 13:40

Sorry just noticed you said on NHS

BubbleGirl01 · 07/01/2015 13:52

I have had 16 week scans in my last two pregnancies due to a prior stillbirth as my DD2 had a very rare condition that was not picked up until I was 30 weeks pregnant. If it's at a fetal medicine unit they can do very in depth ones to look for potential problems that won't show up on a normal scan. I found out the sexes nice and early too.

GingerbreadPudding · 07/01/2015 13:54

I had a 16 week scan as I have had laser treatment for precancerous cells on my cervix, years and years ago, and they wanted to check that my cervix was holding up and and not prematurely shortening. It's not unusual.

GerbilsAteMyCat · 07/01/2015 13:56

I had a 16 week scan as I had opted for the triple test.

CarlaTromans · 08/01/2015 19:43

I've been told that i'll have more scans as I have 2 wombs and 2 cervix ??
