Whooping cough in pregnancy

I work at a school and my head has called to say one of my colleagues has just let her know she has whooping cough.

I know that it's dangerous to babies and that's why pregnant women have the vaccine but it's not a danger to an unborn baby if the pregnant mother gets it is it?

I've tried NHS website and calling my community midwife (no answer) but the information is all around dangers to babies.

Can anyone reassure me (and my head who is very kindly worrying of I should be in tmrw!!!!) that it's all fine and I can go to work without worrying.

You could ring your maternity assessment unit for advice

It's possibly not going to affect the unborn baby, but if you get it & don't recover & that baby is born then he/she might get it, after which its a nightmare situation of both of you having it.

Are you close to having the WC vaccine? It does take a few weeks to become effective though.

Noon miles off being able to have the vaccine as I'm only 13 weeks.

I can't get through to the assessment unit, the only number I've got is for maternity triage which is for bleeding/broken waters etc.

I'm booked into a hospital out of area (I'm moving into area soon) and so don't have a community midwife at the hospital. The community midwife I do have works at the local birthing centre bit I can't get hold of anyone.

The information out there is a bit confusing. It seems to suggest that it's bad if you have it close to labour as you can pass it on to the newborn baby. I'm pretty sure it would really knock you for 6 if you got it while pregnant but I can't get any info on if it's dangerous to unborn babies.

Id perhaps call the nhs non emergency number...is it 101..double check that number though it might be police....baby brain!!
