Hair dyes that are safe during pregnancy - any recommendations?

I'm 10 weeks pregnant, and have a fancy dress party to go to in two weeks. I'd like to dye my hair darker to go with my costume, and I'd like to use an organic/natural dye or one that is recommended as safe during pregnancy.

Can anyone recommend me a brand?

Thanks!

AFAIK they are all safe in pregnancy unless you were planning on eating some Grin

The advice seems a bit mixed and vague pacific: WTE book says 'some experts' [vague] recommend not using anything until you're past the first trimester, but then this is the same book which says you should ring your council to check that your tap water's safe Grin

Grin

Well, I am a henna user (sitting here with dried on mud on my head) and apparently that is a terrible allergen, so what do I know.

I have no specific knowledge about hair dyes and pregnancy but used to have my hair dyed at the hair dressers in all 4 of my pregnancies and nobody ever bat an eyelid.

Could you read the box of your preferred product? Or ring their customer service no to ask?

Holland and barratt the health shop usually have natural hair dyes. They won't have the biggest range but it may be worth checking it out?

How about a vegan hair dye, such as manic panic or directions

They fade after a few washes, and are more like a tinted conditioner. I even sleep with it in to get a more vivid colour. .. Must be safe!

I am now in the last week's of my third pg and have always been told by numerous different medical professionals that hair dye will not affect your baby and do have always dyed my hair using regular hair dye.

The main reason you are advised against dying your hair in pregnancy is actually because your hair can react differently and it may get damaged much more easily;not because it does harm to your baby. You could always do a strand test first to make sure it's the right result.

Thanks everyone for you responses. I've got lots of options now - will have a look at H and B/vegan dyes, but also feel a bit more relaxed about using normal dye.

Cheers!

I has my hair coloured at the hairdressers throughout my last pregnancy and will be getting it some again next week (10 weeks)

I think they're fine unless you leave them on for ages. The main issue is that your skin might be more sensitive during pregnancy.
