Struggling with this "balanced diet" thing; tell me I'm not alone!

I'm 8 weeks pregnant and really, really struggling to eat healthily. I feel so guilty because I know I should be eating vegetables all the time or whatever but all I seem to want is carbs and crap meat.

To make it worse as well, I'd been veggie for three months before I found out I was pregnant, but that's gone out the window...

I seem to be ravenous at certain points of the day so I'll end up grabbing snacks like crisps, or just now for my lunch I went to McDonald's, which I'd never normally do midweek!

Someone ease my conscience and tell me I'm not alone...?

Im 22 weeks and thats still all i want. Baby is fine pregnancy vitamins will have to do!! If i eat something i dont want ill be sick anyway so theres no point!

35 weeks here, you're not alone. Some days I eat perfectly, other days go to shit - You just have to cut yourself some slack! The last thing I want to do most days is cook a meal in the evening, but I make the effort and feel better for it. The days I do eat 'badly', I usually feel sluggish for a good few hours but if your body is telling you that the last thing it wants is fruit and veg then it's okay to listen to it. Just don't eat nothing but crap, and you'll be fine x

When you're in the throes of pregnancy nausea, forget about healthy eating. I'm 7 weeks and feel hideous. I can only stomach bland carbs. It was the same in my first pregnancy.

There's plenty of time for healthy eating when you stop feeling so sick. Or you could do what I did last time, and develop a Greggs obsession...

I found it hard in the first trimester, I think most people do. You're exhausted, feel sick (if your me need to eat carbs constantly to not throw up) and things stop appealing to you whereas other things suddenly look great for no reason. Now I'm into the second trimester (16w) it's been easy to go back to healthy stuff, back to lots of fruit and veg which in the first trimester made me vomit though I've always loved it - weird.

I am sure you can work it out when you start to feel better. Don't worry at 8 weeks, once you perk up concentrate on giving baby healthy food to taste and you healthy food to enjoy too.

21 weeks and same here. I'm still being sick and have a fuckload of aversions and easily nauseated. I eat what I can, which is often bland unhealthy crap.

Jodie1982 · 08/10/2014 15:12

Your not alone. I've gone off most stuff, and will eat whatever I fancy at that time. Before pregnancy I would love Salads, Veg n most fruits but now I have to really want it. I'm sitting eating a pint of Ice right now, yummy. Also I absolutely love Crisps!!!

BananaToast · 08/10/2014 15:18

All I've wanted is bread, pasta, crisps and other bland carbs. Even worse, I read that the baby is now starting to swallow amniotic fluid and taste flavours from my diet so I feel like I should be eating a massive range of healthy foods. I do eat some healthy food, but the same thing over and over again. Figure I'll improve things in a few weeks when I feel more normal.

avocadotoast · 08/10/2014 15:49

divingoffthebalcony my Greggs obsession is already here haha!

I'm glad I'm not alone though, hopefully I'll be able to up the ante and get some veggies down me soon Smile

Nope, you're not alone! Make sure to take a pregnancy supplement to get your vitamins. My appetite went in my 1st trimester and I lost quite a bit of weight. If I did want food, it was greasy things and carbs.

My appetite is slowly coming back, and I'm now eating more vegs and things.

Don't worry, it'll be fine!

Bondy83 · 09/10/2014 09:35

I think eat whatever you fancy. Ive got no appetite what so ever so have to force myself to eat. Eating junk has to be better than nothing at all.

RiverRocks · 09/10/2014 13:45

I'm 16 weeks, and my balanced diet consists of bread and crisps in one hand and chocolate and ice lollies in the other Grin

I used to eat a lot of fruit and veg before, but now I really struggle to stomach it. I've gone from a dozen apples a week to maybe 2 or 3.

I'm hoping once the nausea calms down, I'll go back to eating normal foods again (Nandos chicken, how I've missed you!), but if not, I figure it's only 8 months. Baby is getting all the nutrients it needs from my pregnancy vitamins - it's me who's going to end up with rickets Wink

I was also worried about this as I'm v. overweight and although before pregnancy I was eating healthily I have gone off vegetables. I spoke to my midwife who reassured me that so long as I don't overdo the unhealthy stuff and eat plenty of fruit I'll be fine.
