12 week NT scan, Gastroschisis is suspected

Hi Everyone,

I went in to get my NT scan last Thursday and was told by the tech that my baby might have Gastroschisis (it's a rare birth defect, in which the baby's abdominal wall didn't form correctly and it allows intestines to protrude outside of the belly). Since I was being scanned on the first day of 12th week she said "there's still chance it'll close properly" then scheduled me for a follow-up scan 2 weeks later to confirm.

I then went to my regular 12 week appointment with ob last Friday, he used the ultrasound machine in his office (lower resolution though) but found nothing abnormal, he told me not to worry too much just yet as even if it is Gastro it's fairly straight forward procedure to fix after birth. I am wondering if anyone have similar experience to share. I am constantly worried and can't do anything else..

My best friends baby had gastro and she is now a happy healthy 3 year old with no problems at all. All I can say is try not to worry until you have a definite diagnosis. When is the next scan?

I can only use TV as a reference point, but I've seen a lot of babies with gastroschisis on various TV programmes, and the babies all have successful surgery and do well.

There was a baby boy with gastroschisis on the first series of One Born Every Minute - maybe you could track it down via the Channel 4 website?

A friend's baby had this at 12 week scan but it had closed up by 14 weeks and all was normal. Try not to worry too much (easy to say I know!) at least until after you've had the follow up scan, as it may all be normal by then.

FortyFacedFuckers: That's encouraging news! I've learned so much in just a few days. They scheduled me to re-scan next Thursday (Oct 16).

divingoffthebalcony: Thanks! I will search for the program. My doc even told me "if your baby is going to have a birth defect this is the one you want". I guess it hit me so hard because neither me or DH had heard of this condition before.

minipie: Great to hear your friend's baby was all good! That would be what I am hoping for now! Two weeks seems like eternity though lol. I will update after the follow-up scan.

I went in for the follow up scan this morning, everything looked good!!! The sonograher and the ob both took a careful look and told me the organs are inside and I can stop worrying. I am so happy! Thank you so much ladies for your support and comfort!
