Query over first ultrasound/ dating scan

Hi - I am 6 weeks pregnant and have just had my first doctors appointment. They just seemed to take my word for it and didn't carry out any tests or anything.

I know I am not very far along but I feel great so far. Only symptom is slight sensitive bbs and a bit if tiredness. Obviously the full symptoms may not have hit yet but, if I am lucky and continue to feel fine, I can't help thinking that it seems like an awfully long time until my first ultrasound to check the baby is actually there and growing as expected!

I know that the first ultrasound is usually at around 12 weeks. The doctor also confirmed this but I forgot to clarify whether this would be 12 weeks from the date of last period or from conception?

Just wondering at what stage anyone else had their first scan?? I guess I am just anxious that everything is ok and I know it sounds strange but I kind of wish I felt worse so at least I knew that the little poppy seed was there, ok and comfy!

They always use the date of your last period to measure weeks etc when pg. As you can't be 100% sure what day you ovulated/conceived. Good luck with the pregnancy. I'm 6 weeks pg with DC2. Due date is 30th may, when is your due date?

Balderdabble · 06/10/2014 18:26

Congratulations! Yup, sounds about right. I was surprised they just took your word for it and no tests or anything too. The scan is 12 weeks from your last period and it is the first official validation you get. I did have my booking in appt with the midwife at around 8 weeks though - they just get loads of details from you so when that is might vary I guess.

croon979 · 06/10/2014 19:40

Thanks Birdiegirl! Good luck for you too. By my calculations my due date is 7 June! Not long after you....

Thanks Balderdabble, I have just read lots of posts about girls getting home tests verified by having blood tests and other tests etc but maybe that is just for suspect tests i.e. Changeable BFP/bfn or if there are other concerns. Anyway, good to know that it wasn't just me that thought the lack of testing was odd!

Think the first 12 weeks will be a looooong wait!

I don't think it is standard for Drs to carry out pregnancy tests, they will just take your word for it.

The wait at the start is so so long!! My first scan was 14+2 and my booking in appointment wasn't until 16 weeks (they are very busy down my way!). I had no symptoms what so ever, and apart from the massive bump and constant booting I get now I think i would still find it hard to believe!

I thought at my scan they would tell me I had made a mistake, lol. IMO though, after that 12 week scan the time goes so fast its scary!!

Syd35 · 06/10/2014 20:24

I am feeling the same as you OP, due 31st May and no real symptoms as yet. Considering going for a private scan as I am feeling impatient too!

croon979 · 06/10/2014 20:45

Thanks Hulahoops, that is reassuring :). I thought the booking in appointment had to come before the scan but I guess not!

Impatient is the word Syd35! I have just taken another home pregnancy test just to make sure - two very clear strong lines - but I'll have to chill out soon and stop doing that!

Hi there, I've just had my visit to the doctors and was in there for about 2 minutes! Flu jab in one arm and phone number for the midwife in my other hand then out the door.
I am 5 weeks +1 at the moment having found out 5 days ago. It has been the longest 5 days so I dread to think how long the next few weeks will go until my booking appointment and scan.
I have also just taken another pregnancy test!

croon979 · 06/10/2014 21:05

Hi Heidi, congratulations - nice to meet a few forumites who are all in the same boat. I am just hoping my letter for the booking in appointment/scan will come soon so at least I can start a countdown chart or something! Do you have any symptoms yet?

heidibuttons · 06/10/2014 21:11

Congratulations back at you! Smile Have you been given dates for your appointments yet? The midwife phoned and said she was sending out a letter but told me when it would be.
I seem to be symptom free at the moment, although I think I might feel better if there were some symptoms. What about you?

croon979 · 06/10/2014 21:14

No I have been given no appointment dates yet, doctor simply booked me in for a referral and said letter would come in post!
I am particularly tired at the end of the day (but I do have a tendency to sleep a lot anyway so nothing too unusual). I have also needed to oee more frequently (sorry, probably tmi) but at the moment feeling nothing else really. I am the same as you, would almost be comforted if I felt a bit nauseous. Early days though I guess!

croon979 Congratulations!

I didn't get tested either - in fact, I got referred directly on to my midwife. Standard pregnancy blood tests and urine tests were then done. Still awaiting my scan letter. Pregnancy is counted from the first day of you last period. I personally couldn't wait all those weeks to the 12 week scan so ended up paying privately for one at 7 and 10 weeks.

Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy :D

heidibuttons · 06/10/2014 21:18

Yes, I am sure if/when pregnancy sickness strikes I will not be glad for it!

croon979 · 06/10/2014 21:26

Thanks for the info Plinkyplonks! If I haven't heard anything about midwife appointment or 12 week scan in next couple of weeks I may well crack and also decide on a private scan!

I thought the same, am 6 + 3 and was surprised that they didn't get me to take a test there to confirm.. I had a group session with the midwife just for information, as it was the last one they are doing. Then I have my booking in appointment 23rd October, first scan booked for 17th November, although I have booked a private scan for the 24th October (will be a day under 9 weeks), just for reassurance :) have been feeling rubbish though, but I think its down to my pregnancy vitamins, the ones I was taking were double the strength of pregnacare so am changing to a different one today

skyra13 · 07/10/2014 09:24

My doctors didn't do no test rang them and told them im pregnant they asked how far told them then they booked me in to see midwife at 6 weeks as i was on holiday after so was midwife but normally they ask u to wait till 8 week to have first appointment with midwife!

The doctor didn't want to see me at all!

Good luck my midwife is a bit useless didn't even send my info off to hospital for scan i had to ring the hospital and they had to ask for my paperwork!

Currently 14 weeks +2 x

croon979 · 07/10/2014 20:06

Think I spoke too soon re no symptoms as I have felt really sick on and off today, mainly after I have eaten...today I definitely felt pregnant!

Thanks for info re dating scans and booking in appointments and congratulations! X
