Hi had my first sweep earlier this afternoon not half as bad as what i was expecting and mw said i was 3cm dilated and baby's head was really low down. She said she wouldn't be surprised if i didn't labour before my next appointment on Friday.

I don't want to get my hopes up too much though as shes been saying since 37 weeks that she thinks baby will make an appearance anytime now and wouldn't need my next appointment! So as you can imagine very fed up been 40+6 weeks with no baby still!

Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience and mw was actually right that time. Would love to think this time shes right and no need for induction on Monday.

Any experiences would be nice to know

With DS1 I had an extremely successful first sweep. I had it at 8am and was in labour by 1pm!

Yep - had the baby 24 hours later. I was 1cm dilated and 8 days overdue though.

Sorry no. Failed sweeps with all three dc. Bouncing on gym ball got things started with dc1. Illness got dc2 going and had induction with dc3 after sweep and waters broken. It just doesn't work for everyone!

Hiya, I am glad your sweep wasn't as bad as you expected as I am 40+5 and having my first sweep tomorrow so will watch this thread with interest. I will let you know how I get on. Wishing you all the best, fingers crossed for you xxx

Thankyou for your replies, no sign of anything starting yet i did have a show this morning but i know that doesn't guarantee it'll happen anytime soon. Think im just going to countdown to be induced on Monday and if she decides to come before is a bonus!

lolee good luck for your sweep today, just try and stay relaxed think thats what helped me :) hope your a lucky one and it gets things started for you xx

Thanks nickiw123, you were right it wasn't as bad as I thought either, no discomfort afterwards which is what I heard. I am apparently one cm and my cervix soft so maybe you never know, she only 3/5 though and I didn't think I had a show yet but didn't ask if that is something that must have happened to have had a sweep today (bit confused there). I have been offered a second sweep at the weekend and I'm booked in for induction next week although I will be refusing it but she had to book as that's procedure.

I had a sweep with dd1 at an ante-natal appointment in late afternoon, left the hospital at 5.30, labour started around 6 with regular contractions and dd1 born at 1 am. I assume the sweep started it all off.

Dd2 was 5 hours with no sweep

First sweep on Wednesday not successful, another booked for tomorrow.

Worked for me both times. First time was at 37+6 and I was already 3cm dilated (but didn't know it) - sweep at 9am, waters broke at 11am DS1 was delivered at 4pm.

Second time I was 37+6 again, but only 1-2cm dilated but DS2 was a little slower to arrive at 38+2.

I think your cervix has to be favourable and at 3cm+ it seems to be quite successful.

Good luck!
