Midwife care with second baby?

Hi, I'm 9+3 with dc#2. Although it wasn't too long ago (ds is 14 months) I was under midwife care last, I can't remember when I had my first app with the midwife? I thought I'd have had a call for the booking in app by now. I have heard they don't bother as much with second babies as they do firsts, but I thought a intro again would have been standard? I had a tough pregnancy last time (heart shaped uterus, 2 small bleeds, gestational diabetes, pgp & sickness ALL the way through) so just a bit anxious about knowing who to call if I need help. I assume I'll be in the same team as last time but who knows lol. Just wondering about other peoples experience of maternity care with their second?

Congratulations Shelagh! Midwives don't generally give you as many appointments with 2nd pregnancies, my total planned appointments is 7 plus scans whereas with a first pregnancy it was 10 plus scans.

Having said that, you should be having your booking appointment any day soon now plus arranging date for dating scan at 12/13 weeks. I would give them a call maybe on Wednesday if you haven't heard anything for your booking appointment.
Also, I have had some extra appointments on request this time, I just rang my midwife and explained what was worrying me and they were happy to see me the same day if they could fit me it so don't suffer in silence if you have any worries and need to speak to someone - give them a call.
Good luck with your pregnancy! xx

Thank you! I have my scan on 21st Oct, received that letter a week or so ago. I'll def give them a phone on Wednesday. I've been sicker than I was last time this time so far, hoping it eases off but we shall see! Lol. Smile

Hi Shelagh and congrats!
I am 26 weeks with DD2. I have had the two usual scans, booking in wasn't until 16 weeks would you believe!! Then had an appointment at 18 weeks and haven't had one since, next is at 28 weeks. I think it depends on area, there must be something in the water down this way as they seem incredibly busy. I have been very lucky with very easy pregnancies both times, but I agree with chuckling, don't suffer in silence and ring up if you need any reassurances :-)

I had my booking appointment at 10 weeks then 16 week, 24 week, 28 week appointments and will have one at 34 weeks next plus 12 and 20 week scans.

Hi Hula & LittleBear,

Thanks for your experiences. I'm not too fussed about seeing them too often, just want to make sure I don't miss out on screening tests. Is there some that don't need to be done if they were done with a first? I expect to get gestational diabetes again so I know I'll get more apps then. :-)

I've had all the same tests again.
