Because the nub is almost in a straight line parallel with the spine. In boys it has an upwards angle of 30% or more.

It's not nonsense. If you can "read" the picture properly ie tell if the nub is pointing at more or less than whatever the angle from the spine is supposed to be then it has a very high success rate..... I found a table somewhere when I had my 14 week scan and 90 something % reliable at that gestation.

And my obstetrician friend said "pretty reliable".

Not that I could try and tell you!

Agree with pp. Meant to be very accurate at the 12 week scan. I'd maybe not go and paint the room pink but I'd be choosing more girls names than boys if I were you
I saw dc2's on the scan straight away. Fingers crossed I'll know in next few days if I was right.
