Just a bit of fun really! I had my appointment with the midwife today at 18 +3 because she knew i wanted to know the sex she guessed a boy listening to the heartbeat and seemed fairly confident. Anyone had any success this way?

My baby's HB at 17 weeks was 155, m/w advised (for fun) pointed towards a girl and this was confirmed for me at 20wk scan. Although the older m/w who was attending said that its not scientifically accurate.

Nah, it's rubbish. It gets it right about 50% of the time unsurprisingly.

Flixy102 · 10/09/2014 21:50

I was told that if the heartbeat sounded like a train, which mine did, then its a girl. DS is definitely a boy!

woodwaj · 10/09/2014 21:55

I thought train was a boy? Horse for girl! Mine defo sounded like a train but at the same time I have nothing to compare it to! I asked if she normally gets it right and she said she did. I think it was her confidence that made me post!

Heart rate at 16 weeks was 155 for me, gender scan showed boy since then heart rates been between 128 and 160 depending on if he's moving of not, I'm 40+3 still awaiting absolute confirmation on gender

woodwaj · 11/09/2014 07:14

She never told me the rate! Good luck cereal!!

My midwife confidently turned to me and said 'girl?' last week after listening to the hb. I told her we hadn't found out and she then backtracked. Bpm was 157.

Apparently there is something in there being a difference, but not until you're actually in labour (I'm sure I've read anyway).

My gut instinct is girl though, so I hope she's right!

woodwaj · 11/09/2014 08:31

I think mine only said because she knew i was ok with it. I bet loads put their foot in it with guesses!!

The overlap is so great ... Every hcp I've had has rolled their eyes and said that it is in the 24 hrs up to and including birth when it becomes in any way clear!

Until then it's the old 50/50!

woodwaj · 11/09/2014 11:03

Oh yeah I know it could all be wrong scans included. Its nice to guess though!

I never understand this tbh. The baby's heartbeat will change from one hour to the next, depending on whether or not he/she is active, asleep or if you've have something to eat or drink.

woodwaj · 11/09/2014 11:50

Like i said just a bit of fun. I was looking to see if anyone had any success when baby had arrivedSmile

When in labour my midwife announced that it was a boy due to the heartbeat. I convinced I was carrying a girl. It was a boy.
