Cervical stitch/ loss of twins

Hi,
I lost twin fraternal boys at April at 22 weeks. I am now pregnant again and have been recommended to get a cervical stitch because of my previous loss I want to make sure I give myself the best possible chance. Can anyone advise me of what it felt like, did you go back to work etc. I'm terrified that I'll get an infection again they said that when I lost the twins that either an infection opened the cervix or the cervix opened and let the infection in. The postmortem showed acute chorioamnionitis caused by pseudomonas. Thanks a million for your replies

A stitch is put in under sterile conditions in theatre. It should be very safe. Ask them about what antibiotics they'll give you at the proceedure as a precaution as well.

I'm in a very similar position. My twins were born at 22+5. My cervix had opened and I then got an infection.
I was initially advised to have an elective stitch with a future pregnancy but when I did get pregnant again (a single pregnancy) I had a different consultant and this one preferred to use cyclogest rather than the stitch. (Apparently a study has shown the same results but less risk from having the stitch?)
So I'm now 27+2, I've been on the cyclogest since 13+5 and I'll be on it till I'm 34 weeks. I had a cervical scan 2 weeks ago and my cervix was 4cm with no funnelling :)
I can't say it's not scary. I'm still scared most days! But my consultant is very happy with how things are progressing, so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed now.

Thanks Schumann that makes me feel better. Can I ask how soon you got pregnant after losing your twins? I am pregnant three months after losing them and am worried it's too soon etc

Hi. I got pregnant 5 months after losing ours, but we were trying from about 2/3 months and my consultant said that was ok! 5 months actually felt like ages!
Hope everything goes well for you. Are you due to see a consultant soon? My bereavement midwife is also excellent for chatting things over with. Have you got one of those?

Yes I have decided to go private and found a consultant that is a high risk specialist I have an eight week scan in two weeks. So I might mention the cyclogest. My hospital doesn't have a bereavement midwife. I'm paranoid I'm going to get an infection again did you feel the same?

Yes and still am paranoid. I won't go swimming - I normally love swimming especially when pregnant. And I won't have a bath either. I know I'm probably being irrational but I'm thinking it's not forever, it's just for 9 months so that's doable!
Have you looked at the sands website? There's a forum on there with a lot of threads about the cervix and pregnancy after loss.
I've just realised that I didn't say how sorry I am about your boys. I'm sorry you're also going through this. It's such a tough time and I'm constantly shocked by how many people this happens too (something I was blissfully unaware of before it happened to us).

Hi Schumann, thanks I'm also sorry for your loss as well, were you twins boys or girls? We are doing really well at the moment in the beginning I thought we'd never get over this but time really does help and we do feel better. I'd love to here how you get on and wish you all the very best it must be such a relief to get to your stage now

Please can I ask is this issue common? I thought problems with the cervix were usually Due to previous surgery etc. is this not the case? X

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, but fx for this baby!
I had a cervical stitch for my DS (now 22mo), my situation was different from yours, I hadn't had a previous late loss, I'd had a loop cone biopsy and pressed the midwife to have my cervix scanned - which was 24mm and so I had a stitch placed. It was done at 16 weeks and was really simple (I had been petrified as I was aware of the risks associated and it was my 3rd pregnancy after 2 pre 12w miscarriages), I had a spinal block and was actually able to go home late the same day, very minimal discomfort, I had to take it easy initially but after the recovery time was able to work, walk dogs and have a normal life! The stitch came out at 37 weeks and despite being told to prepare for delivery then we went to 39+5... I've just had another BFP and have very mixed feelings about the likelihood of having another but essentially it was straightforward and effective! Good luck!

I had an emergency cervical stitch at 19 weeks as they checked me out after a prem baby and found I had an incompetent cerivix. It was scary at the time as I was petrified I was going to lose my baby.

The op was actually really easy though. Spinal block, awake throughout, no pain at all. Op over in about 20 mins. Legs came back to life in 2-3 hours. Went home. Panicked for the rest of the pregnancy until labour at bang on 37 weeks. But the cervical stitch was magic for me :-) just a singleton dd for me (now a determined 3 yo!) good luck.

Sorry, I didn't answer the question about work. I did after a few weeks - I really took it easy for a while though. Dr didn't really say I had to - but I needed to for my own sanity and they were happy to sign me off for a bit to let me. Once I got to 26/28 weeks I even went on a few trains for work, being just about sure I wasn't about to go into labour any second! They scanned my cervix every 2/3 weeks and as nothing was changing they were confident she was staying point.

I'm so so sorry about your loss - wishing you all the luck for this pregnancy.

Hi conlon28. Ours were a girl and a boy. I'm generally ok but I find I'm thinking of them all the time and I guess I will forever now.
Yes it is a relief to be this far, think I'll feel even better after week 30. At the moment the end seems a long way off!

Hi Schumann just warned to check in how you're doing? I had scan with consultant and everything fine so far. He thinks I have a bicornuate uterus which may have contributed to loss last time. He is definite about getting stitch and has also prescribed cyclogest which I'm happy about as I've read great things about them. Feeling abit worried at moment have been thinking about my twin boys a lot and how they are the children I should have had. Do you ever think about that?
