I'm 34 weeks pregnant now and we have come up with a shortlist of names...I am not completely mad about any of them so would appreciate feedback on what you all think. My dh is Italian so the names we've picked are Italian, to match our surname, but we've tried to pick ones that kind of 'work' over here too...please let me know which ones you like/or alternative suggestions (we know we are having a bambina hence the focus on girls names!)

  • Elena (Helen)
  • Chiara (Clare in Italian - pronounced Kee-ara)
  • Elisabetta (Elizabeth - we'd probably shorten to Elisa or Beth)
  • Luisa (Louisa)

Thanks!

Elisabetta - absolutely gorgeous.

Agree with Californifrau though - you'll know what to callher when you see her!

Tinasan · 19/09/2006 09:51

Thanks for all your responses, you've been really helpful! Eli70 - yes if we call her Elisabetta, we'd shorten it to Elisa for every day use. SSSandy - my dh suggested Lucia so that's another one to think of. Anna was my favorite at the very beginning so thanks for reminding me of it - I still really like it! And hopefully as some of you said we will know what to call her when we see her

Thanks again

Just a thought... my boss and his wife are italian and have called their daughter beatrice but it sounds so beautiful when pronounced in italian almost like beetra-tcha.. apologies for the rubbish spelling.... I love Chiara though!! Good luck

3andnomore · 20/09/2006 20:23

I can see Geordiemacminx point about beautyful pronounciation in one language...but, it might cause confusion...!
I am german, dh is english and as tough as it was, we went out of our way to find names for our boys we a) like and B) that are ornounced exactly the same way in both languages, as to reduce confusion!

Hi everybody, some of the most popular names here in Italy at the moment are as follows:
Martina
Sofia
Chiara
Elisa
Paola
Anna
Gaia
Giada
Giorgia
Federica (hard to pronouce though)

Lucia is old fashioned but if you like it...it sounds nice anyway.

Ciao!

Tinasan · 22/09/2006 15:30

Thanks eli70 - I think we might be going for Elisabetta/Elisa for short. We'd actually rather if the name isn't too modern/popular, we prefer traditional ones I think that won't be dated to a particular time...anyway we will decide once and for all in about a month's time when she makes her appearance!

Don't like Chiara due to confusion with Irish pronounciation (Kee - ra)

I like Luisa - partly because there is a beautiful little girl at DDs nursery caleed Luisa

Also like Sofia

LieselVonTrapp · 22/09/2006 16:30

How bout Liesel??

utterlyconfused · 22/09/2006 16:40

I think all these names are beautiful. Love Chiara, but yes, I fear would be confused with Ciara/Kiera all the time. I think Elisabetta is really versatile and would work the best as you have all the classic abbreviations, plus the option to pronounce English/italian without really changing it.
I think my one worry would be that she were called Betty!

sleepfinder · 22/09/2006 16:55

I think Elena, Elisabetta and Luisa are all really lovely. I don't like Chiara and I can't quite put my finger on why - it sounds a bit like a type of car, maybe?

beckybrastraps · 22/09/2006 16:58

Elisabetta. I used to go to school with one, and it was shortened to Elisa. Lovely.

Elibean · 22/09/2006 18:04

I like them all! We have the same dilemma, but with French/English (with some Jewish thrown in) and are also struggling.

I have two Helenes, one Claire, and one Louise in my immediate family..and dd is Elia...so you are choosing from names I can relate to

My favourite, I think, is Elisa....

franca70 · 22/09/2006 18:23

I love Luisa

lubella · 22/09/2006 19:18

I am Italian and I must say I love Elisabetta as that is my sister's name we all call her Elisa.
Lucia is also a beautiful name.

TitianRed · 22/09/2006 19:28

Lucia is beautiful (and she will be the light of your life!)
Like Luisa too (and it wouln't bother me if it were deemed 'old fashioned')

saadia · 22/09/2006 19:30

I like all the original ones suggested, also like Julia.
