My grow chart has been bugging me since I got it. It just doesn't make sense to me.
If I follow the 50th centile it suggests that my average weight baby would be 4600g /10lb 2 which I will get no where near!
It also has my youngest two children who were 3500g / 7lb 11 and 3400g and / 7lb 8 on the 6th and 4th centile with Small for gestational age by them. That cant be right surely?
Yes my babys are getting smaller my first was 8lb 12 but im sure babys in the 7lbs are not small are they?
Do your graphs/charts make more sense than myn?

Mine is like yours. DS was 3.25kg (at 2 weeks overdue!) and this baby measured slightly small at the 20wk scan - no surprise as DH and I are both short!!

I've just looked at mine and it's got this one at 8.13 if it's 50th centile. That's 2oz bigger than dd was on the 75th centile.
Thing is, this baby has measured smaller at my scans and I'm convinced my bump is smaller. I'm not even convinced the midwife has measured me correctly as the measurement I got was out by about 4cm to hers plus she asked me where to put the tape so I'm going by my measurements not hers
So I've no idea!

My main worry is that the baby has no chance of being on the 50th and will most likely be 4th or 6th centile on this chart and they may try and get me to have her early when in reality I just have small babys.

These charts seem to cause more harm than good!

I think if they were using the chart to gauge weight they'd offer you a growth scan and go from there. I don't think they can use the chart to make you deliver early.

gunwalloe · 28/06/2014 22:32

I will be having growth scans the first one is next week are you having them to?

No, I'm not. They're much more likely to go with a growth scan result than your chart so don't worry about it until you get those results.

The chart is personalised for you. Are you particularly tall/large? It also goes up to 42 weeks so make sure you are reading the 40 week weight.

HaPPy8 · 29/06/2014 09:33

Have they input your details correctly on the chart?

Ive got 5 wk old twins so was scanned a heck of a lot, fortnightly then wkly. The growth of twins is very closely monitored. Because of this I had measurements done at every scan. The measurements put both of them above the 95th centile and I started to panic. I asked the consultant about the size and he said that growth charts do more harm than good as people look at the figures and not what they should be used for. Consultants use the charts to monitor a pattern of growth not the actual figures, so aslong as they roughlyfollow a line then tthat's good.

Looking at the charts I was going to have 2 huge babies in reality if we had got to full term they would have been7 1/2 lb ish. Not eexactly the huge babies the chart predicted. The hospital I was at seemed to use 2 different calculations for growth aswel. One in my notes and then a different chart when I asked them to gestimate the weight. The 2nd one was nearly spot on.

Ignore the figures and watch the growth trend. If it varies too much either way then they should be concerned, if that's ok you'll have an average sized baby for you.
