M&S baby clothes sizing - newborn or 1 month?

Hi. This is my first baby and I'm getting in a right pickle about baby sizing. I would like to buy some baby groes that will fit my baby for bringing him home from hospital/introducing to relatives, etc however I also want to be economical. 0-3months all look a bit big but I notice M&S do an imbetween size ('1 month') and I was wondering if this would fit a newborn but last a bit longer. I'd be grateful if anyone could advise. Also, more generally for how long does the 'newborn' size fit a baby (i.e. after how long will they move up to 0-3 months size)?

My children were all about 8lbs when born, and none of the 'new baby' or 0-1 month stuff would fit. There is nothing worse than tight fitting/resctrictive clothes on a baby.

They all went straight into 0-3 months.

0 - 3 and if you need smaller ones, Tesco is open 24/7 most places.

I have bought a three pack of baby grows in the 'newborn' size in Next. they state up to 7.5 LBs so everything else i am buying in the 0-3 month size. the smaller size may not fit at all and if it does it will only fit for about 2 weeks

Unfortunately this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question! It depends very much on how big your baby is and how fast they grow, which can differ quite widely. I have short chubby babies and they fit in a smaller size than long thin babies of the same weight, so weight isn't always much of a guide either!

Just for a point of comparison, ds1 was 6lb3 and wore tiny/early baby till 5 weeks, newborn till almost 3 months, a and 0-3 till 5 months. Ds2 was 8lb2 and wore newborn for the first month, and is currently in 0-3 at 8 weeks - I expect him to be in this size for about another month.

I would suggest getting a few things in each size and then wait and see. Remember the shops will still be open after the baby is born, and you can always order stuff online or send someone else out.

Get a few simple things in each size. You can always donate the newborn stuff if it's not needed. DS1 was 8lb7 and fitted in newborn stuff for about 3 weeks. DS2 7lb5 and fitted in it for well over a month.

And it's always good to have the next size in, ready, as they grow out of stuff overnight, sometimes.

I've had two babies in the upper 6lb range. Newborn stuff swamped them when they were born and it was lovely to put them in tiny baby sized stuff so it actually fitted them. Babies are all scrunched up for the first few days after birth as well so clothes look even bigger on them. I have got lots of wear out of the newborn sized stuff, but there is no way of knowing in advance whether or not you will (and my first baby had a scan at 33 weeks where they estimated his weight at 8-9lbs btw!). You would probably be safe buying the 1 month size stuff (which is enormous on my 17 day old) and then buy some smaller stuff after baby is born if they turn out to be little - both times I or DH have had to do multiple runs to Mothercare in the week after birth to buy all the things we had forgotten/suddenly realised we 'needed'. Maybe take one newborn outfit and one bigger outfit to the hospital so you can dress baby in whichever one fits best?

My first was 7lb2 and put weight on steadily but slowly - he was in newborn size for at least 10 weeks iirc!

Second was 8lb6 and in newborn size for about 10mins

You could buy some newborn stuff and not cut the tags off then someone could perhaps exchange it for 0-3 if your baby turns out to be bigger? And at least one pack of 0-3 as that will almost definitely fit at some point!

Thanks for your responses. So I am right to be confused! Haha. I think I will buy a couple of multipacks in different sizes as many of you have suggested - seem sensible :-)

My 9lb baby wore the up to 1 month size for 2-3 weeks IIRC, and then went into 0-3.

The up to 1 month from next and marks was perfect for my 8lb baby, so was mothercare new baby which is up to 10lb. He was in them for 3 weeks before going into 0-3. I bought just one pack of marks newborn (up to 7.5lb or something) and they were too small. If you buy the smaller size keep it in the packet so you can exchange it if your baby is big. Personally my DS would have been lost in 0-3 at birth so I am glad I got something for the 8-10lb size, but don't go overboard, stick to a sensible number and just vests and babygros

I would check the weight limits on them rather than the month sizes as they all vary.
In my head 'Newborn' size is up to 9-10lbs,(which is what I will be taking into hospital) & 0-3 usually fit up to 12-14 lbs depending on the brand. Anything that fits up to 7-8 lbs would be 'tiny baby' IMO.
However I bought a pack of sleep suits and vests from Morrisons in Newborn size and after looking in detail, they only fit up to 7.5lbs so I will take those back to swap for their 0-3.
I'd buy one pack of up to 9-10lbs and the rest 0-3 as they will grow into them if not ready to go straight into them.

I've got sleep suits and vests from M&S, John Lewis, Tesco, Mothercare, Asda, Morrisons, Babies R US, Primark, Sainsburys and they are almost all different! There should be a standard sizing rule across all clothes if you ask me - for adults as well, far too confusing!

I'm planning on buying a couple of the 3 packs from Next in up to 1 month (which say up to 10 lbs) and then the rest in 0-3 months. And the wee vests are so cheap in Tesco that I'll just buy a variety. Its difficult to know but both me and DH are fairly slight and I haven't put on loads of weight so far.....so we'll be relatively surprised if I give birth to a whopper but you never know!

Well I had a 9 pounder and had to go and get more newborn clothes as the 0-3 swamped him for the first few weeks. I'd say get a few of each, you can always get more.
