What's it like when your water breaks?

Hi. I had to get my waters broken with my first baby so don't have any idea what it's actually like when your waters break.

How messy is it? I've read that the smell is so bad that you need to replace carpets, mattresses etc. is that true?
Thanks

Mine went at home, sat up in bed and felt a distinct pop and then a tidal wave. Thank goodness for waterproof sheet. Kept coming until I gave birth, there was loads of it. No smell but it wasn't like actual water, it was much more slippery. I distinctly remember my bare legs being really slippery when I tried to wipe it off with a towel during labour

I was sat on the loo having a wee and it just kept going with my first DC! It took me a while to work out what was going on as I'd had no contractions or any other signs before. When I tried to stop 'weeing' I had no control and that's what tipped me off. Mine was trickly and small gushes with contractions. It's not bad smelling at all, nicer than wee!
