Polyhydramnios - did you deliver early?

I have mild polyhydramnios (well, I did at 29 weeks, I have another growth scan in a few days at 34 weeks). I feel absolutely enormous. If you had this, did you end up going into labour early? I think I'm going to pop before 40 weeks!

Hi OP, I had it last pregnancy and was enormous also and all bump. They found out last minute and despite every man and his dog telling me I'd never go full term I went 16 days over and the midwife had to physically push him into place as the doctor broke my waters as he wasn't engaged even then. I was told when they checked earlier in pregnancy if I had too much fluid that they'd have put me in for a c sec at 38 weeks had they realised I had polyhydramnios. Have they said they'd let you go full term?

They haven't said anything yet but I have a second growth scan next week so I expect they'll tell me then.

What was your AFI like, if that's not a too personal question?!

I had it in my second pregnancy, identified at 31 weeks. No one ever talked about induction.

I had an appointment with a consultant at 40+5 for a sweep, and because baby wasn't fully engaged (common with second pregnancies - baby can bob in and out!) they couldn't do it and wanted to induce me next day due to the risk of cord prolapse and PPH if I got any bigger.

I went in for induction but was already 4cm dilated. They broke my waters and contractions started quickly and DD was born within 5 hours. No PPH and had a natural 3rd stage.

When they measured my bump I was 53cm on the day she was born

It was only at 40+5 that I was told about the risk of preterm labour with polyhydramnios. I hope you have a better community midwife than I did. Mine preferred to ignore the informed element of consent!

It was all fine though - I was just huge. And when my waters we're ruptured there was something of a flood

Meant to ask - have you had GTT and TORCH screenings?

I cant remember measurements etc but I had this with my second and was pretty big! Had that diabetes test etc but all was fine. I ended up going 9 days over, think it was the threat of being induced that kicked labour off Dd was fine, weighed 7lb 8oz. I just happened to be carrying a lot of water for some reason.

I also had it mildly from about 32 weeks in my second pregnancy. Had the GTT and TORCH screens to rule out any obvious causes. I was warned I'd deliver early but went to 40+2! DS was a very big baby and the extra fluid was put down to his size (big babies apparently make more!)

I've had GTT, which was fine. Haven't been offered TORCH though...

My first scan showed the baby was larger than average, but not huge.

I am just paranoid about going into labour early!

I was given a choice of a c-section at 38 weeks or waiting to go into labour but having to stay in hospital until that happened (they decided it was too dangerous to induce me). I chose the c-section.

Oh and my apparently 'massive' baby was actually a shade over 3kgs so not very big at all

I have no idea what my AFI was but they only realised I had it when I was already overdue, prior to that a midwife sent me for a scan at around 25-28weeks as when she measured and felt bump she suspected it but the sonographer said it wasn't and yet later it turned out to be. They were most concerned about cord prolapse by then and said they didn't want my waters to break spontaneously as there were risks of cord prolapse and so I always presumed that's why when they told me earlier on it would mean a c section early that it was to prevent this. All I do know is that whilst I felt ready to pop early it was not happening. On the bright side when they did break my waters my labour was quick and I didn't have pain relief (which is a miracle for me.)

My baby was 9lb10 but I do seem to have big babies.x

I had polyhydramnios with DS4. My waters broke at 35 weeks but DS wasn't engaged at all and had his feet by his head so I had a C-section 2 days later.

Hi op, yes I had it, and delivered at 32 wks. She was absolutely fine though tiny. I remember feeling really uncomfortable too, was booked in for the diabetes tests but never got that far.

Sure you'll be absolutely fine, but pack your bag! I was on my own as dp was away, had 3 yr old ds, and was throwing random stuff in a hold all at 3am :)

My bag is packed! I have a 2yo and my DH is away for a week on business in 2 weeks' time!
Fortunately he won't be too far away though and the GPs are on standby.

I have been diagnosed with this today baby is slightly bigger than average, AFI is 25.14.
I've had a GTT (all fine) and bloods have been taken for TORCH and parvo.

I'm a bit of a mess really - I know statistically, the likelihood is everything will be fine, but feel awful that something is possibly very wrong.

Can someone say something positive and reassuring please?

In moments of panic I spoke to a friend who was about to qualify as a midwife. She says they see polyhydramnios on delivery suite all the time And the only time it's ever an issue is when it's wrapped up with other issues, such as GD. On it's own it just heightens some risk. Not massively, but it can be an indicator of other things. For the vast majority of women it's just one of those things. They don't know why if occurs.

On an even brighter note, you get extra scans so see your baby again in the the is trimester

Hi, just wanted to share my experience to offer reassurance. I had polyhydramnios with my first baby - i was absolutely vast, my bump was enormous. I too was so worried there would be something wrong with my baby, we had been told that increase in liqor volume could mean baby had a problem with swallowing so he would need a tube passed down his passages at birth just to make sure all fine. Well me and dh worked ourselves into such a frenzy over this, but our baby was perfect. He arrived 12 days late and i had to be induced. Waters were broken and almost drowned the midwife! But good delivery and healthy baby boy who turned 6 last week.... X i didnt have any polyhydramnios with my second pregnancy and im now 24 weeks with our 3rd little one xxx

I had polyhydraminos with dd2, she was born at term plus 3 when my waters broke quite spectacularly whilst laughing with my teenage ds and his friends I had GTT and extra scans to check for cleft palette but no TORCH screen. Dd has autism which I suspected once I learned that polyhydraminos can be a marker for neurological conditions purely because her older brother has autism too (but no polyhydraminos that time)

Yes, I had it. Diagnosed at 29 weeks. Measuring full term by about 34 weeks. And told to expect the baby at any point. They gave me fortnightly scans to measure the fluid levels and assess.

I ended up going overdue and being induced at 41 weeks.

What I will say is that I have never felt so achey, uncomfortable and tired in my life. I think I slept through the last trimester.

Also, because there was a lot of fluid my son was changing positions and somersaulting right up until about 38 weeks. I remember the hospital were worried that I would go into labour and present them with an unexpected breach baby.
