How accurate is heart rate theory?

Hi all

Just back from 16 week midwife appointment, listened in to my darling with the doppler, heart rate was 130-140bpm. Both the midwife and the student took a guess gender wise, but I want your opinions Grin

Also, from your experience, is there any truth in this theory? Or another old wives' tale?

P.S. this is in the name of fun, I have no preference.

Wasn't accurate for me. Mine has always had a fast heartbeat (150+) and I'm having a boy.

x0gawjus0x · 11/02/2014 11:35

My girl started at about 160 and now at 37 weeks she averages around 145 xx

No truth in it all. Both of mine had the opposite rate to what they should have had according to the myth.

In all tests, none of the old wives' tales stand up to scrutiny except, oddly, mothers' intuition. In more cases than can be statistically down to chance, women 'know' what sex they are having. Still not massively accurate though.

My baby's heart rate (which is regularly checked) has always been 145-155 and I'm having a boy.

I read somewhere that there is no difference between heartrates for boys and girls before they are born.

My baby has always had a faster heartbeat and I'm having a boy.

Em2010 · 11/02/2014 11:50

Both mine had very similar heart rates - around 145. One boy, one girl!

ChicaMomma · 11/02/2014 11:50

My consultant told me it is only relevant in the final few weeks, 36+

My babies heart rate was 180 at the first few scans- which woudl make you think it's a girl, if the old wives tale is to be believed.. well,it's a boy, 110% confirmed at the 20 week scan a few weeks back!

TravellingToad · 11/02/2014 11:55

Old wives tale

If baby is sleeping heart rate will be lower. If it's woken up and is active it'll be higher. Just depends what moment you catch the baby as to its heart rate.

Doesn't predict gender at all

PenguinsDontEatKale · 11/02/2014 11:58

It hasn't been supported when people attempt to study it - there's a section on it in the Ostler book Expecting Better. Basically it's rubbish.

But fun I guess since you have a 50% success rate anyway!

firstbaby01 · 11/02/2014 12:12

my baby's was 140 and we have just found out he is a boy Smile that was the only one of the old wives tales that showed towards boy! All the others including the nub theory were saying girl

ajandjjmum · 11/02/2014 12:18

Worked for me, but could well be coincidence!

sambababy · 11/02/2014 13:24

At 12wk scan heart rate was 166 and at 20wks 141. We don't know what we're having but as you can see it changes a lot.

theborrower · 11/02/2014 13:48

Have never heard of this theory until now! Sounds like bollocks an old wives tale to me!
