Can anyone tell me if they have taken antibiotics while pregnant before and/or are antibiotics safe to take while pregnant? I am 18 weeks pregnant and suspect chest infection

Hi all, I am 18 weeks pregnant and started with an awful cold and bad throat last week. Since yesterday my chest has got very sore. I've seen my gp today who says it is an upper respiratory infection but could spread to my chest. I wondered if anyone had taken any antibiotics while pregnant and if it is safe to if necessary?

I had ABs during my 1st pg as I caught whooping cough. I was about 7mths pg but the GP didn't seem at all concerned about giving them to me.

I had appendicitis whilst pregnant with my second child. I had, as you can imagine, shedloads of antibiotics, mostly intravenously. That baby is a strapping 8-yo now. If it is necessary for your health, the GP will decide which is the best AB for you and your unborn baby.

Hopefully, it won't come to that - get better soon!

I've been on 3 different antibiotics already so far for urinary tract infections. The GP will look up which ones are known to be safe in pregnancy and try those. There are quite a few!

I had antibiotics in pregnancy. Once for a UTI and once for bronchitis. There are safe antibiotics for use during pregnancy.

I had abs in previous pregnancies for various issues. Just be aware that sometimes they do have unwanted side effects for some reason everytime I had abs I got thrush

I have had enough to "drop a horse" according to my consultant with my third pregnancy! Metronidazole and erythromycin in such high doses the side effects were crippling. It was a similar story with DC2. Both are fine.

DC1 I had amoxicillin a few times for UTIs but the other two needed so much as I had surgery with both (to do with stitches/incompetent cervix) - DC1 is fine too.

Most antibiotics are safe in pregnancy and doctors usually err on the side of caution if anything. Hope you feel better soon!

I had a UTI and was given one that was safe during pregnancy - I think there are 2 that can be prescribed if I'm not mistaken?

Sorry I can't remember the name of it but it did work!

Ilovekittyelise · 07/01/2014 21:48

yes, penicillin (amoxycillin) & also erythromycin (spelling?!) for chest infection and uti.

think there are quite a few (thought to be) safe.

hope you feel better soon x

I had several courses during my pg as I had constant UTIs and kidney stones as well as a chest infection and changes to my asthma.

There are a few ABs they specifically choose as they are safe in pg and when I spoke to my GP and consultant about all the meds and the risks involved, they both said the risks to your baby of the infection remaining untreated in your body or you having breathing problems from the chest infection would massively outweigh any tiny risks of ABs.

That helped me to think about it more as I was protecting my baby rather than putting them at risk by taking them.

BikeRunSki · 07/01/2014 21:58

Yep. Amoxicillin as tablets and IV, for UTIs in both pg.

Happychick35 · 07/01/2014 22:03

yeap, twice amoxicillin for horrible horrible sinus infection

Leo35 · 07/01/2014 22:04

Yes - ABs for a UTI and a chest infection. I felt much better for the treatment and my son was a whopper at birth, and hale and hearty ever since. I too viewed it as the ABs being a far better alternative to letting infections take a greater hold. Your GP will be able to advise you and reassure you. Hope that you feel better soon.
