whey protein in pregnancy

Just wondering whether it is safe to take whey protein in pregnancy. I am currently 33 weeks and having difficulty eating much. I was told by a midwife to make sure I graze often and to make sure I'm getting plenty of protein. Was thinking if I took whey protein I could either add some to liquids to boost calories and Ive also seen a recipe for healthy flapjacks which includes it. Was just wondering if anyone ele has taken it?

I've not personally used them since finding out im pregnant but some brands may be ok. Do your research. My understanding is that there hasnt been much medical research into it which makes me cautious. Many protein shakes have artificial colours sweeteners which you may wish to avoid.

My advice would be to email the company that produces the whey protein powder and ask directly. That said, I did notice a 'no preggos' sign on the whey powder a nutritionist had recommended for me. Specifically, during pregnancy. Was pretty annoyed with her about that as it wasn't cheap!

Solgar's 'Whey to go' is pretty natural compared to most of the weird powder proteins out there. I drank masses of the stuff during IVF on advice of fertility nutritionist as part of diet changes to balance blood sugars and promote egg quality.

Apparently the structure of lots of the powdered proteins changes if you add heat/cook with them so that is something I'd avoid.

You are probably already doing this but think about other ways you can increase protein balance in your diet. Eg swap a few nuts for a biscuit, add an egg to the milk for making porridge, snack on yoghurts etc
