35 Weeks / Husband on business trip to US

My husband has been asked to go on a 10 days business trip to New York around by 35 & 36th week of pregnancy - I am unhappy about this but am I being unreasonable to ask him to stay? Anyone know any medical statistics about the likelihood of going into labour early?

Are you a first time mother? Impossible to say really. About 80% of women deliver between 37-42 weeks.

I personally would be okay with my DP making a trip like that, but I have gone to 40w and 42w in my pregnancies so wouldn't feel likely to go into premature labour (which pre 37 weeks is)

Thanks JanePurdy - this is my first pregnancy so I have don't much to go on unfortunately.

My husband had to do that at 35 wks. He went West Coast so I was a bit jittery about the flight time. If it was east coast I wouldn't be as concerned.

Just hope he told you in a better way than my DH did. He was so scared he sent me a text message!!

He dropped it into conversation at Sunday lunch with Aunts, Uncles, cousins etc al - so I couldn't get too cross!

Ruddy husbands.

It wouldn't bother me and I've had 39 & 37 weeks.

I would give him an earful for testing the waters in front of family and friends.

Tell him "Great - I'll give you a big shopping list of baby stuff to buy in the USA that can only be bought there" and see if the trip still happens.... Smile

badguider · 16/12/2013 16:20

New York is actually only about 5hrs away. I would have been fine with it as had no complications or scares and didn't feel even close to giving birth by 35/36 weeks.

JamInMyWellies · 16/12/2013 16:32

Oh yes send him with a shopping list. That's what I did and he felt so guilty he brought back loads of stuff.

My husband is going to Italy for 9 days when I'm 36 weeks pregnant. I'm trying not to worry about it..... Hmm

bevbennett100 · 16/12/2013 16:34

Chances are that your baby will be late if it's your first. That said who knows.....

My first baby was born 41 weeks, but it only took 11 hours - first contraction at 11pm, waters broke 1am, hospital at 4am, baby appeared at 9am - so if my husband had been overseas he probably wouldn't have been back in time for the birth.

I don't think its unreasonable to share your concerns with him. I know depending on the job, its not always easy to avoid trips, but I can understand why you'd feel nervous.

quackojuliet · 16/12/2013 16:42

is there someone else you can ask to be a birth partner in the unlikely event you go into labour early? or someone close who would accompany and support you with any concerns or complications?

how i felt about dh taking a trip would depend on those things - we don't really have anyone else so this would worry me. at nearly 37 weeks i am feeling very clingy towards dh and vulnerable. this could just be me though...!

PastaForRudolph · 16/12/2013 17:26

My DH will be in US until I'm 36 weeks but grounded after that. He was away until 36 weeks with my first too.

I do understand how you feel but I guess it comes down to whether he has a real choice or not.

Pooka · 16/12/2013 17:28

Get him to go to THe Children's Place for baby grows and stuff. And perhaps baby gap.

First was on due date. Second was a week late. Third was 3 days early.

You should be fine at 36 weeks.

I wouldn't be happy with the introduction of the topic during a family meal.
