heart racing and shortness of breath

Hoping I could get some advice from you wise mnetters.

I am currently 9wks pregnant with my second baby. With DD I had hypertension from about 32 weeks resulting in pre-eclampsia and early delivery.

As a result my doctor has advised that in this pregnancy I will be consultant led and I saw both my mw and doctor during the week who said my blood pressure is slightly raised but not a massive concern. I have to wait about 4weeks to see my consultant.

The problem is that around this time in the evening I get very short of breath that I need to take my inhaler ( I'm not asthmatic but get like this in summer due to hay fever) and I often wake in the middle of the night with my heart pounding. Even when resting my heart rate is very fast which is really worrying me.

I don't have any known heart issues but all the hcp's I met in my first pregnancy always commented on how fast it is.

Im so worried about strokes/heart attacks and the anxiety isn't helping. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I speak to my gp again or wait to see the consultant. I'm not overweight and I'm not extremely unfit either though could probably do with toning up a bit.

TIA

Get our iron checked. I've been anaemic for years and it got worse during my pregnancy and this was one of my symptoms. It could also be related to the increase in your blood volume. Palpatations are common during pregnancy too, but make an appointment with your gp just to be checked out :)

yep, agree with iron levels needing checking.

ZingWantsGin · 08/11/2013 17:11

yes, I would've said anaemia too.

look in the mirror and pull your bottom eyelid down (as if checking for something in your eye)

if the inside is pale pink or whitish you probably need extra iron.

I recommend Solgar's Gentle Iron or Floradix with added iron.

good luck, I hope you are going to be ok! Smile

I never even thought of iron levels so thank you so much for that, could explain the intense fatigue I have too. I'll maybe buy some spatone tonight and get my bloods done next week.

My heart rate resting is about 95 at the minute which according to dr Google is quite high.

Thanks again!

Just a quickie, I've had both these things since about 6/7 weeks plus the terrible fatigue. I've been told this is just normal as progesterone changes the way our body processes oxygen.

delphi that's very reassuring thanks!

I bought some pregnancy multivitamins with iron in them there now, iwas only on folic acid so hoping those will help with the iron.
