Just made a risotto for dinner and used wine! I even stood in the Kitchen sniffing the open bottle for ten minutes before pouring any! Suppose this is what counts as living dangerously these days,lol.

(And yes I know,the alcohol cooks out but let me have my rebellious moment)

If this wine shortage the press have been banging on about over the last few days is well and truly in affect by the time I start drinking again I honestly will cry. The irony of there being a wine shortage AFTER I haven't drunk any for 6 months is not lost on me.

There is no wine shortage - just less of a wine surplus than in recent years :)

No harm at all in a weekly glass or 2 of wine, in fact there are studies which show children whose mothers had a weekly glass of red after week 12 are less likely to have behavioural problems by age 5!

I'm 35+1 and tonight is my weekly 'wine night', DH brought in a vair nice looking red and I'm salivating at the thought!

featherbag I can't stand red wine unfortunately, though I could be tempted to start!

Also didn't know I was pregnant until I was 9 weeks gone and spent the two weeks before I found out in New York and Chicago with 14 friends for a friends wedding. While there I pretty much drunk my body weight in Long Island Ice tea and Sam Adams beer so figure bump has had more than its fair share of alcohol.

You wouldn't have cooked off all the alcohol in the time it takes to make a risotto by the way - you need to simmer something for 2+ hours to cook off 95% of the alcohol. After 30 minutes 35% would still remain.

I had a glass last night. Been having the odd glass ever since I got into the 2nd trimester.

I was skiing for a month before I found out I was pregnant and thought he was a hangover for the whole time lol.

2.6 units in a mini bottle - yes I used the whole bottle - split between hubby and I so 1.3 units each before any alcohol cooked off. Can live with that.

I had half a guiness tonight, yum.

My rebellious moment was at a birthday party the othercweekend where I had two halves of thatchers gold cider so it felt like two drinks.

I am sure my little one will be fine. With the odd drink here and there as long as I keep away from the beautiful whisky I have waiting patiently for me.

It's so nice to see pregnant ladies being sensible about alcohol!
If you go to some of the american forums there are women there who'll make you feel like the most selfish, evil monster for even thinking about drinking. FAS is a binge drinking condition - no reason moderate, occasional pregnant drinkers should feel bad.

I wonder if you were posting, 'Im having 1 cigarette' what the response would be?

When I had my older dc there were smoking rooms on the post natel wards. Smoking wasn't encouraged but it really wasn't thst big a deal.

Drinking now is treated the same as smoking by HCP's. There isn't a HCP willing or able to define a 'safe' amount.

I think we will end up like America & drinking will eventually be deamionised.

I live in the States and every single time I've had a glass of wine with dinner in a restaurant have had at least one person come up to me to tell me I'm selfish/hurting baby/bad person etc.

Dh used to stick up for me and start reeling off facts but towards the end I've started saying things like "oh gosh, I'd better lay off the crack too." I figure if people don't care about offending me then I shouldn't give a shit about offending them.

The in laws (who are American) have been very vocal about how bad they think it is that I drink. I didn't in the first two trimesters, mainly because I couldn't even hold water down but have in the 3rd. When mil and sol started bitching the other night I pointed out that they have all refused to go get their tdap and there have been whooping cough outbreaks here recently which I think is pretty selfish.

Shelly No study can define a safe limit because no study testing alcohol levels in pregnancy would be approved ethically :)
Some sources would therefore have us believe that there IS no safe limit and that any amount is harmful, which of course is crud. Women should read the research and draw their own conclusions because it's probably never going to be safe for official bodies to recommend a 'safe' amount. Plus they don't trust women not to start binge drinking if any amount is advised as acceptable.

I applied to study midwifery a few years ago (never got accepted :() and to support my application attended a training day by NOFAS, a charity supporting those with featal alcohol syndrome. At that we were told by a neo-natel care doctor who specialised in babies born with alcohol related problems that as far as she was concerned one unit a day (sure she said day) was fine,but what is one unit for me is not one unit for someone else and that's part of the problem, people are all built differently so I could in theory drink a larger glass of wine than another person but we would still only be having one unit each. Her advice was if you know what is one unit for you, and your absolutely sure it's only one unit and that you will stop at one unit, then go ahead and have a drink.

Personally,apart from the risotto,I've just cut out alcohol entirely. I've no judgement for anyone that has a glass (or two) of wine a week, but for me it's just been easier this way. And as I said earlier,the two weeks before I found out I was pregnant I was drinkig cocktails for brunch!

I'm so sick of the whole alcohol in pregnancy thing (am 26 weeks). Other than in the first trimester when I couldn't stand the smell of it, let alone the taste, I've been having a small glass or 2 of red wine (or champagne Grin) a week - my choice, and I'm happy with it, as is DH. Yet I just feel I can't win - whenever it's not just the two of us, if I have a glass of wine, someone's guaranteed to comment ('my daughter didn't touch alcohol at all when she was pregnant last year', 'oh, they allow that these days, do they?', etc etc), and if I don't have a glass, someone else is bound to comment ('my daughter had a little glass every now and then, you know', 'go on, one won't hurt'). I guess it's good preparation for the public scrutiny my parenting skills are going to come under Blush
