The Mail is scaremongering filth. That is all.

Sleepthief · 01/11/2013 18:21

I can't bring myself to click on DM links, but it sounds like the focus of Victoria Derbyshire on 5Live this morning, where she interviewed a woman who had been wrongly diagnosed as having had a miscarriage and advised to have an immediate D&C. She decided to wait it out instead and in fact went on to have a perfectly healthy baby. An inquiry has discovered similar mistakes may go back as far as 2006 (I think) at this particular hospital - one in Wales - obviously not all with such a happy outcome Sad Pretty shocking.

But yes, the DM is scaremongering filth Grin

Queen0fFlamingEverything · 01/11/2013 18:27

I haven't read the article because its in the DM but if its the same story as was on the BBC earlier, its not scaremongering. I know the lady who was interviewed and it really is shocking.

Geckos48 · 01/11/2013 18:28

Urgh, what is dreadful about this is it will be giving people false hope and potentially stopping people from having scans :(

SaucyJack · 01/11/2013 18:33

The case mentioned was absolutely dreadful Sad

I wonder how common it is tho, for a heartbeat to be missed on a standard scan, but picked up by the dildo cam?

I'm hoping not very common at all, obviously.

Sleepthief · 01/11/2013 18:34

I hope not Gecko. What they said was that it should be standard procedure to have at least two scans to confirm miscarriage - transvaginally, preferably I think. Most hospitals follow this procedure; this particular one didn't. It really didn't strike me as scaremongering Smile

peeapod · 01/11/2013 18:50

sorry if the link came from a source people dont like, would they like to add another similar one. End of the day its and education for people to make sure they get and ask for 2 scans in these difficult circumstances...

I am indeed shocked at this recent news!
Although when I was going through a MMC I was in no pain and went for a routine scan to be told no baby! I wasn't given any other scans and was told to make. Decision on what I wanted to do in fear of being in pain and the uncertain start of it all and having a 2 year old I decided to have the op!!! But even up to going in I prayed they had made a mistake!!! With all this information coming to light again - I do pray that I never got rid of my baby to soon, as mistakes by these professionals can be made!
Very thankful I did have a healthy pregnancy after ectopic & tube removal. My angel is a miracle!!!!
I guess it's up to us to read and be warned or have blind faith in these people knowing that they could get it wrong!
It's all choices !!!!!!!

BeQuicksieorBeDead · 02/11/2013 10:34

In my experience of mmc, if you raise concerns about the scan being incorrect, they.strongly advise you to wait and see, ie wait to miscarry naturally. No pressure was put on me to choose any particular route through mmc and I assume my hospital were following guidelines. You always have the option to wait, unless there are complications, and I guess that would also give you the answer you didnt want to hear... But making out that hospitals give you no option but to abort is a terrible thing to do in a national newspaper. It is just going to cause pain and upset to many women who will think what if.

greentshirt · 02/11/2013 10:38

Countmyblessings if it was a routine scan (12 weeks?) where they saw your MMC theres usually no mistaking it due to what you would be expecting to see at that gestation or even a couple of weeks either side to allow for incorrect dates.

This article is dealing with very early scans I think where the margin for error/change in dates etc is much bigger so waiting is advised rather than straight for abortive action.

Hope that helps a little, I cant imagine how horrible it must be to get the worst news when you arent expecting it x

Cybercat · 02/11/2013 10:44

This happened to me a few weeks ago at a private clinic offering reassurance scans. I chose to go at (what I believed) was 8 1/2 weeks - sonographer confirmed the foetus age but said no heartbeat. Thankfully the EPU at my NHS hospital rescanned me before offering treatment and found me to be 5 1/2 weeks pregnant with a very clear heartbeat using transvaginal scan. Sadly I miscarried this week but the initial stress of that scan still plays on my mind and as it turns out I have little come back on that clinic. I have complained, they have denied any fault (I know it wouldn't have changed my outcome but their scan was incorrect) and my only option now is to seek legal advice which I cannot afford. I hate to think this is happening to other parents.

mercibucket · 02/11/2013 10:46

this has happened before as well, it is very Sad . many women just want to 'get it over with' and choose the operation, they are supposed to re scan you but this didnt happen to my friends at a different hospital
Sad

LittlePeaPod · 02/11/2013 11:18

peeapod I am guessing you are new to MN and you don't know how hated the Daily Mail is on MN.. You couldn't have picked a more disposed source. Grin

LittlePeaPod · 02/11/2013 11:19

Dispised even..

greentshirt · 02/11/2013 11:28

Countmyblessings · 02/11/2013 13:46

I was not 12 weeks I was just shy of nearly 6 weeks I had 1 scan where she told me there was no heartbeat! I was numb! I asked if they could check again I was told she was well trained and knew what to look for!!!!
I was with my DH and my 2 year old son the rest of my children were at school & college!!
My heart was broken words can't describe how I felt at that time!!! I'm just thankful that I did go on this year to have a beautiful baby!
