Had my first pregnancy scare last night :(

Made it to 28 weeks and all smooth sailing up until last night, and that's despite being a type 1, overweight diabetic.

Went to the toilet last night just as I was going to bed and as I turned to flush noticed bright red blood on the toilet tissue. Not a lot but a definite streak. Had another wipe and there was more so popped in a pad and phoned the hospital. Gave the auxiliary who took my call all the details but had to wait for a midwife to call back and in the 15 minutes (longest 15 minutes of my life!) it took her to call back I went from being quite calm to having a total melt down! As there was nothing showing in the pad, I could feel baby moving and I had no cramps midwife said I could come in for monitoring but that she was happy that I didn't NEED to come in if I was happy to keep an eye on things at home, which as my husband was at work last night meaning I was home alone I decided to do. My husband came home and we both slept pretty crappily last night but baby been moving like mad since I first noticed the spotting and thankfully there's not been anything since. Spoke to the midwife again this morning and they're happy that everything is fine but have taken the day off work anyway to relax on the couch all day and let husband run round after me.

Never again will I under estimate how fucking terrifying a streak of blood on some toilet roll can be!

What I cant figure out though is what the hell caused it, midwife asked all the normal questions and ruled out the obvious (like sex for example) so it seems it's literally came and went again out of nowhere, which in itself is worrying surely?

This happened to me at the same gestation! I went in for monitoring and no cause found. As long as it's stopped don't be too concerned :)

Hi another, very scary for u but glad there hasn't been any further bleeding. I've never experienced bleeding in pregnancy so can't offer any advice but hope u are feeling better today x

Hello Anothermrssmith. Poor you, that must have been/be very scary.

I'm also 28 weeks, and I had a similar bleed at about 14 weeks. They never were able to properly identify the cause but suggested it might have been something to do with a small part of the placenta lying low and close to the cervical canal.

Try not to worry. Very easy to say I know. I am currently at home "resting" (worrying!) too due to a different but equally scary issue. I'm told this is how the lifetime of worrying starts...

I had a bleed at 13 weeks - was lying in bed and suddenly felt something, looked down and there was a fair amount of blood. Cleaned myself up, put a pad In, went to the hospital…and that was it. Nothing. Placenta was in a good location, cervix was fine, had a very long and thorough exam and scan a couple of days later, and there couldn't find a single thing that would have caused it.

The consultant I saw said that sometimes it happens, and they have no idea what causes it or why or whether it'll happen again - it didn't in my case, and I'm now a very grumpy 40-weeker ;-) the only possible indicator she mentioned was that occasionally you still bleed a small amount around th time your period would be due for some reason.
