I had an overstayer 18 months ago. Did all the stuff and still she wouldn't budge, even induction took 2 goes! Once it kicked off and the epidural was on the go it was fine. I'm demanding an elcs on the next one though ??

I was induced and ended up (after 2 days) with a EMCS. It was fine and you and your baby get monitored frequently and once they take you down to the labour ward the midwife won't leave but stay with you at all times even if you are still only 2 cm dilated. You get really good care as they don't want to risk anything happening to the baby so will monitor you both closely. Mine was a positive experience and I recovered really quickly from my cs as well. All the best!

If you have the syntocin drip have an epidural first-really!!!

easterbaby · 27/10/2013 17:09

Most people do advise an epidural. I only realised this after my LO was born two years ago without one! Our induction drip worked well and quickly: we 'got by' with gas and air, plus pethidine. It was hard work, but DS arrived 4 hours after the drip went in. (First labours are usually longer than this. Not sure if l would have coped as well with a 12 hour one -which l think is the average.)

I used a hypno birthing CD beforehand, and it really helped me to relax, as did my fabulous midwives. Even so, I'd say take the drugs! A man would. Grin

I agree with other posters, if you need the syntocin drip do seriously consider having an epidural.

I didn't want one, convinced I could manage without but I needed one as the contractions come in so fast and so intense that it is overwhelming.

There are no medals for getting through without pain relief, so have as stress free a labour as possible and take the epidural if it gets too much.

MummyLuce · 27/10/2013 19:13

Aw I think your little one will come before! You have a whole week and you are already a bit dilated. I don't think you'll be needing an induction..xxx but yea I had one, no advice other than just take it as it comes and go with the flow!

MrsMuskett · 27/10/2013 20:12

Thanks guys, I was only going to have gas and air as pain relief as I don't do well with needles and my mum had a bad reaction with pethidine, but if we get to sun I'm gonna ask for epi cos I keep reading how painful inductions can b. me and hubby been trying everything to get our monkey out but he's glued in there I think, he's gonna need help. I was 12 days late n they started my mum off and brother was 9 days late so I'm guessing its in the genes :( thanks for ur stories xx

I've had two inductions.

First one. Waters broken and then synto. Had diamorphine but only because I thought I was in for a long haul. 4 hours later out came dd and midwife didn't believe I was ready to push.

Second one - waters broken. 1:40 hours later out popped ds with gas and air.

Not all inductions are that bad!!

GooFawkes · 27/10/2013 22:41

I was induced with DS, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

If your mum reacted to pethidin, can you request Meptid?

I was worried about pethidin as I hate being sick and was told it is less likely with Meptid. It is more expensive, some hospitals don't offer it, or only if you ask for it by name.

GooFawkes · 27/10/2013 22:43

I didn't have an epidural, but I might as well have done as I had to have a spinal for manual removal of placenta.

sarahleanne · 27/10/2013 22:44

I had the drip with my second (induced with my first too but only by the pessary) and I didn't have the epidural on either labours. It is possible to cope without one.I just had gas and air. So, if you fancy trying to do it naturally , scared of needles etc then it can definitely be done :)

Misty9 · 27/10/2013 22:55

Not all inductions are bad! I was scared when my waters went and nothing happened, so planned home birth went out the window and into hospital for induction. Straight onto syntocinon drip and managed contractions with breathing for 2.5 hrs before pushing for 2.5hrs...he came out just before they intervened with scissors and forceps! Didn't want gas and air as I hate feeling sick oh the irony to get so sick this pregnancy and I would describe the sensation as more overwhelming than painful - but it's different for everybody.

Hopefully your little man will decide to make an appearance before next sun, fingers crossed for you - but induction isn't always awful :)

MrsMuskett · 28/10/2013 09:16

Thanks guys, seems a mix of good and bad experience, I'm having the pessary 1st and hopefully can walk around so will just have gas and air n c how we go xx

I was really worried about being induced as well. As it turned out the 1st pesary got things under way after 12 (boring) hours even though my cervix was still thick at the start. I laboured over night with only paracetamol and baby was born after 12 hours. I only used a little gas and air during delivery.
I was offered a bath to help with the pain and went from 1 to 10 cm in about 3 hours.
Was a much better and more natural experience than I was expecting! You have plenty of time, you may not need it anyway!

MrsMuskett · 30/10/2013 11:27

Earlgrey sounds like urs was a positive experience,I hope mines the same. I just know it's gonna b an induction that gets him going,he just doesn't wanna come out. Ill post as soon as we've had him so others in similar circumstances can hear my story too. Thanks guys xx
