Just that really. I was only in briefly today as am part time but a child was sent home with suspected chicken pox. Just wondered if anyone knows whether I and baby are at risk in anyway?

My mum has said I did have it when i was younger but just feel a bit worried . Even if that child is now off school I know how quickly it can spread.

Should I be worried? Should I speak to my doc or am I just being silly?

The doc will ask if you've had it, and as you have, will say that you will be fine.

ButterMyArse · 25/09/2013 15:55

If you've had it before you'll be fine.

My toddler had it recently when I was about 22 weeks pregnant, I called the doctor who wasn't worried at all.

You're fine if you've had it, would be really unlikely to catch it again. Your baby is fine too. x

Speak to your Doctor. It is possible for people to get it more than once, its just unlikely.

KarmaBiatch · 25/09/2013 17:44

You will more than likely be totally fine, but even if you've had chicken pox you can still get the 'adult' version which is shingles, and its far more debilitating than chicken pox.

If in doubt have a wee word with your GP, but the likelihood of catching it is pretty slim.

I had it badly when I was 8 weeks pregnant. This was 22 years ago and no medical bod was bothered in the slightest at the time! My dd was (and is) perfect Grin. I remember reading since though, something about it only being dangerous for baby if you get it in the final week or so of pregnancy. Worth a visit to the gp though to put your mind at rest.

Just to clarify, it's not possible to catch shingles from someone with chicken pox (only the other way round - you can catch chicken pox from someone with shingles). This is confirmed on the NHS website here - www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/Pages/Introduction.aspx so please don't worry about shingles. As others have said if you've already had chicken pox it's most likely you will have immunity and thus very unlikely you will contract it.

And in any case shingles is localised to the nerve and not dangerous when pregnant. (I had it in v early preg with dd2).
