Help! Re Omeprazole, indigestion, heartburn, burping - really unbearable now

Hi, I hope someone can suggest something else to try!

I am only 12 weeks and already on 20mg omeprazole for heartburn. I have been told I can up my dose to 40mg but I'm not sure I want to or even that it will work.

THe burning acid sensation has gone, but all the other symptoms remain. As soon as I eat or drink(anything from a meal to a cracker to an apple or even just water) the food sits at the bottom of my throat for hours, i feel like I have an undigested meal in my gullet. I burp these hideous, wet, loud belching burps that are not only very uncomfortable but taste awful and I am left with a constant, lingering after taste in my mouth of whatever it is I ate. Because of this I am craving strong tasting foods eg pickles, but then the taste of those linger too. I burp all day long and sometimes they are sicky burps. They actually hurt sometimes!

The only way to get over this sensation is to eat more as the feeling goes away temporarily as I swallow food, which obviously perpetuates the problem. So I don't eat much, but am consequently hungry all the time. Which in turn also causes tummy pains and trapped wind.

At the moment my only way of semi-managing it is by taking huge gulps of gaviscon as soon as I eat anything which takes the edge off, and sucking mints to help with the after taste.

Has anyone taken 40mg omeprazole in pregnancy? Will it even work? Anything else I can try? I have tried peppermint, ginger, cutting out various foods etc - nothing works I get these symptoms 24/7 whatever food I eat.

Its making me utterly miserable.

Thanks

I have found that ranitidine has been my heartburn savour, only need one 75mg pill a day to not have any symptoms! You can get it on prescrip from your doctor Smile

hope you feel better soon!

I had a gastroscopy today and the doctore suggested I sleep just with one pillow but raise the bed up so that I am sleeping at an angle (he suggested putting the legs of bed on a couple of bricks)

sorry - can't offer anything else... Sad

Thanks, I don't actually get it so much at night just whenever I eat, all day every day. I make sure I don't eat a few hrs before bed time. But it's become very hard to live with and it's leaving me completely exhausted...

You can get rantidine over the counter, some people try it in combination with omeprazole. Maybe it might make the difference.

In the US some people try lansoprazole (related, also a PPI) which apparently works better than omeprazole (anecdotal from pregnant US friends) but no idea if you can get it here!

I sympathise - without my 20mg omeprazole I am in constant agony, and even with it I can still sometimes feel the heartburn poking through. It is horrid.
