late midwife appointment

Hi all. I found out I was pregnant last Thursday and called docs straightaway to book an appointment (booked for Friday this week).

from speaking to people on here i decided to call back docs this morning and book in with the midwife direct which I've done, but they can't see me until 9th October!

If the doc dates my pregnancy back to my first period then I'll be 8 weeks by the time I go to docs on Friday, and almost 11 by the time I see a midwife. tbh I think I ovulated late but still it seems like a really long wait to me. does the midwife bookthe scan? I'm still going to docs ov Fri as want to see if anything can happen sooner. I'm a first time mum to be and find it all really daunting, the fact I can't see a midwife for so long just worries me.

Anyone else in a similar situation or can offer any advice?

I think booking appointment is meant to be around 8 weeks but if they know your dates I'm sure it'll be fine. They don't actually do anything just ask loads of questions.

The only issue would be when they can book your scan but assuming you're having the combined test it can be anything up to 14 weeks so you have time.

Tbh I doubt the gp can make anything happen quicker as they seem to be completely separate here.

In my area, we self refer to the midwives and we aren't able to call to make our booking in appointment until we reach 8 weeks, then booking in is at 10 weeks. Following that the midwife contacts the ultrasound team to get them to write to you with a date for your dating scan.

I did find the early weeks very stressful and it felt like a very long wait, but it sounds like your area is similar to mine. If you can hold tight until your booking in on the 9th I would--it's unlikely that your GP will be able to do anything at all. Hope the time goes quickly for you

Mine won't see you before 8 either and prefer it to be around 10. I'm going on weds when I'll be 10+3

Here they do the booking app at the same time as the first scan so it was all done at 12 weeks, I didn't see anyone before then. I didn't see the community midwife until 16 weeks. It definitely feels like forever but once the ball starts rolling it isn't so bad :)

Thanks everyone, I just feel as though I need some kind of medical proof that I actually am pregnant!

I really want to tell parents but wanted to wait until after an appointment.

If you want to wait before telling people wait til the scan. Nothing happens to confirm anything before this they don't do any tests

I will definitely wait to tell most people until scan, but it could be ages away so would like to tell parents sooner.

What has everyone else done?

We had to tell my in laws at 7 weeks due to going away with them for the weekend. I told my mum and my sisters this weekend at 10 weeks. I have had 2 early scans though. Wanted to have seen a heartbeat before we told the in laws and check it was still there before we told my fam!

We only told my parents before the scan then everyone else afterwards Smile

We told family straight away, and a few friends. we were grateful of their support and excitement in the early days, and it was nice that a few people understood why I was feeling grotty/tired. Your GP is unlikely to do anything to confirm your pregnancy.

I know what you mean about wanting medical proof of pregnancy, but they really won't do anything useful at your first appt.

TBH the scans are the only thing that seem worth going to if you're having a low risk pregnancy. Unless you get a nice midwife who likes a natter, they really are very underwhelming.

I can't have one til the 7th either. I'll be about 11/12 weeks by then. When I asked whether they would be able to fit in my scan by the date necessary they said "well we don't often miss anybody out".

Yeah Confused that makes me feel better!

It all feels a bit... Uncaring doesn't it?! I know that's silly because they are so stretched. But they just don't seem to care! They don't even say it in a "nice way" IYSWIM!

Booking in with the midwives is normally at about 10 weeks, scan at 12-13 weeks.

I was about 11 weeks for mw appt and they rang and booked my scan for the following week whilst I was sat in the office. If it's the same as where I am then you'll be fine. Gp appointments in pg are pointless IMO so you're right not bothering. I'm actually surprised that my 38 week appt is with my gp seeing as it could be the last befor the birth based on previous pg. X

Sounds normal to me. They used to book you in at around 8 weeks but it now seems to have moved to around 10-11 weeks.
