Apart from nuchal, do they look for anything at 12wk scan?

Just wondering as I have quite bad anxiety about this pregnancy. If there was something glaringly obvious would it be picked up at 12 weeks or do they wait for 20 weeks to check any anomalys?

Thanks

Yes, they look to see if general size is in line with dates and that body measurements are in proper proportion. And some structural anomalies do show up that early, though that tends to be only the major ones.

They check for all limbs and organs, cleft palette, spine, etc but they found a later anomaly in my 20 week scan that was not possible to be seen at 12 weeks. Try to look forward to your scan, it's wonderful!

thanks, it's my second pg but I can't remember a lot from the first only 2 years ago! I am looking forward to it but I'm not sure I can handlt the 2 month wait until the anomaly scan. I'm terrified in fact. it's going to be a long 6 months until this baby finally arrives!

They could see that my baby had anencephaly at the 12 week scan. Now I'm pg again, only 4 weeks, and the wait for the 12 week scan to find out whether all is well is going to last forever

Check for limbs, stomach, bladder, cord insertion ( as in are there any hernias?) skull forming, symmetry in the brain.
Will pick up major cases of spinabifida only ( mostly those including the brain/skull)
Significantly increased nuchal fold can also indicate heart abnormalities , major heart abnormalities only are picked up on early scan but it is rare to pick up to be honest.
Definitely can't pick up a cleft lip or palate. In fact cleft palates ( that don't include a cleft lip) are not really picked up at 20 week scan either most of the time.

There's an awful lot they can pick up on as has been mentioned. A lot depends on how thorough the sonographer is (hospital/PCT policy/NICE guidelines) although some issues will be really obvious anyway.

Somewhere like the Fetal Medicine Centre in London will check for absolutely everything checkable at the 12 week scan, and it lasts a lot longer than a regular NHS scan as a result.
