Irregular Heart Beat whilst pregnant

Hello all,

I am 16 weeks pregnant with twins and I have noticed that my heart is beating irregularly. It is skipping beats pretty much all of the time.

I am pretty sure it is because of the increased blood flow and not too much to worry about (although I am of course) and I am going to mention it to the midwife when I see her on Friday and see what she says. I feel very well other than the usual pregnancy stuff.

I just wondered if anyone else had ever experienced this and what happened when you mentioned it to your MW/GP?

hello, yes I had this when pregnant with all my children. I get it anyway occasionally but its worse while pregnant. They checked me out during the first pregnancy and it was ectopic beats and perfectly harmless. HTH

I had this when pregnant and it turned out to be because I was anaemic. Within a week of taking iron supplements it stopped.

Thank you Ladies that helps to put my mind at rest.

I will still mention it on friday to my midwife but I am sure it is fine (just another thing to panic about on the pregnancy roller coaster!! ) I don't remember having it with my son but maybe I just didn't notice or it is more pronounced because it is twins this time.

Thanks again x

Yes - mine was due to anaemia too.

Hi danilou, i just came on here to post after having a funny heartbeat about half hour ago whilst sat relaxing, then sae you already had.
It felt like i had one massive beat followed by a rushing feeling which left me feeling funny.
Im only 11 weeks so dont see midwife for a while so its reassuring to read im not alone and from the responses its all ok. Thanks ladies

I will post on Friday as well to let you know what the midwife says Peacenquiet2.

My pulse just keeps missing a beat every 5 or so beats.

If you are worried though pop in and see you GP. I am sure it is fine but may put your mind at rest.

xx

Hi,

The midwife said she thought it was probably due to the pregnancy but asked me to go to the doctor just to have it checked.

He took my pulse and listened to my heart and he said that it was normal for this to happen in pregnancy as the blood flow is increased and the heart has to work harder.

I would go and get it checked if you are worried as it has put my mind at rest and I was pleased to rule out any underlying conditions.

xx

I have read that heart rate increases and even though it's very early days for me I have been more aware of fluttering feelings in my heart. To be fair I am so excited and anxious it could be that too. I may mention it when I manage to go more than a few days without calling a health professional - feeling like a real pest!
