Why is brown/old blood OK?

Surely it was new once? It's just been hanging about up there longer.
Am I wrong to be worried? Had a massive brown stringy mucusy discharge this evening, and a bit worried. I had a red bleed three weeks ago, but EPU said to monitor myself, but had very little even brown since then.

Basically I am freaking out a bit (12 weeks tomorrow) and would like some reassurance/ advice.

Brown is 'better' because hopefully it means whatever was bleeding has now stopped & you're just seeing the 'left overs'. Red blood would mean it was fresh and therefore you'd still be bleeding somewhere.

I would definately call the EPU if you've had previous bleeds, I dont want to scare you too much, but I had brown blood which turned to red after a few days at which point I found I had a missed miscarriage, but I also know people have had lots of bleeds and everything was fine. Thinking positive thoughts for you Flowers - if it was ok last time, I'm sure this is less serious.

Thanks for your replies ladies. I have no idea if everything is OK or not unfortunately as when I had the red bleed the EPU refuse to see me. It's been quite a tense three week, so v worried about the latest brown lot. I think I will be insistent in the morning.

It's really horrible. You have my sympathy. I had a lot of bleeding in the first trimester. My GP referred me for a scan, have you tried going to them?

I had brown blood for a few days and had a scan after it and little bean was still fine! Try not to worry too much (I know!)

All bleeding should be checked out x

The brown gunk is getting worse, and now has strinigy bits. EPU again just gave advice on how to self-manage a miscarriage Sad. Saw GP this afternoon who said to phone again in the morning and be more insistent.

I thought all bleeding should be checked too, but apparently not where I live.

Just wanted to come back and say everything is fine!

EPU much better this morning and got me straight in for a scan. No evidence really to see where the bleed is coming from. But it's not uterine, could be ovarian cyst or cervical.

Feeling very very relieved to have seen a wiggly baby in there.
