Applying for a job whilst 4wks pregnant

A little advice would be appreciated from one and all.

I'm currently a student midwife, and I'm due to finish my course in three weeks' time. I have an interview on Tuesday for a position in the local trust, which is where I'd really like to work, and there's a fairly good chance I'll be offered a position.

My problem is that I'm currently 4 weeks pregnant. This was a surprise although not a mistake, we've been trying for a long time due to polycystic ovaries, and I'm both shocked and delighted that I'm pg. I had a mmc last year and am not at all sure that this pregnancy will be successful so am stressing over that as well.

What would you do? Tell them at the interview? Tell them if/when they offer me a job? Or not tell them until I start? Midwifery jobs are hard to come by and by taking myself out of the race for a year immediately after qualifying I would be significantly damaging my chances of employment in future. I trained in this trust and know all the midwives well, and I know I'm a good candidate for the job; but morally I feel it's a bit objectionable not to tell them.

Help!

Don't tell them until after you have been offered the job. Until then it is a non issue and it would be discriminatory for them to ask you. Congratulations and good luck!

I got a job when I was already 4 weeks pregnant with DS, I had no idea!

You're not obliged to disclose the fact that you are pregnant at any time, technically. Especially not at an interview. Besides which not many people know this early!

I've just accepted a nanny position and il be almost 12wks when I start, which is the 3rd week of sept. I didn't know I was PG when we talked about the position, but I knew I was when I went for the interview. I need this job and I think I have a right to earn money before this baby (my 2nd) is born. I do feel guilty but you goto do what you goto do!

Don't tell.

maggiethemagpie · 17/08/2013 21:03

I wouldn't tell. If I were you I'd wait til I had an offer, and accepted it, then when you start tell them. Its really none of their business at this point. I accepted a job knowing I was pregnant (found out after the interview but before the offer) and then told them a few weeks later (I was already working there as a temp) and no one batted an eyelid, it was fine.
People get pregnant and have babies all the time. What would they do if you got pregnant just after you started? They'll get over it.

Thanks all. I suppose I just don't want start out on the wrong foot, but maggie you're right, no different to if I got pg straight after accepting. Feel a lot better knowing the majority vote is to keep quiet!

I applied for a promoted post in my school knowing I was pregnant, and had the interview at 18 weeks - I didn't tell them before. You would be crazy to tell them, even if it isn't "supposed" to affect your chances, why would you risk it?!

Good luck!

Lovemyprincess4eva · 18/08/2013 12:38

I wouldn't tell them. I got my job at 8 weeks and only told them when I was offered the position. They were fine about it and were just glad I told them before starting.
Only thing is I didn't qualify for maternity pay because I hadn't been there long enough. But I have managed to get maternity allowance. Xx

I know they say being pregnant shouldn't affect job etc. but I wouldn't say anything good luck with your interview :D

Sarahmains40 · 18/08/2013 16:27

Oh and congratulations on your little baby

ratqueen · 18/08/2013 17:53
