i suppose it varies depending on area

but am 4+4 and pregnant after a MMC of twins a few months ago

i am so scared of miscarrying again and the thought of having to wait till 12 weeks to be scanned is awful. as that was the time i found out my twins had died at 6 weeks the last time :( i couldnt bear to go through anything like that again and i hated knowing i had carried them around for that long :(

so if anyone else is / has been pg after MC, were you offered an earlier scan?

i am thinking of having a private early scan if i am not allowed an NHS one, how early do they do private scans? am guessing 6 weeks + as wouldnt see anything before that anyway i guess

I wasn't but many early pregnancy units have walk-in ultrasound clinics (prepare to queue for hours!) and if not and you can afford it, it's possible to get deals on private reassurance scans.

Try not to worry too much - I know easier said than done - this time may well be completely different.

extracrunchy · 17/08/2013 10:48

Oh - early private scans are 6 weeks plus, but depends on the clinic I think.

sugarandspite · 17/08/2013 10:48

Our early pregnancy unit offers an early scan at 8 weeks if you have had a previous miscarriage. You just ring them up directly and book in.

Private early scans are about £120ish around here and they don't like to do them before 8 weeks as there isn't much to see before then. We have had one with Babybond and they were v good.

Good luck with your pregnancy

dirtyface · 17/08/2013 10:52

ok thank you all x

£120 is not too bad actually for a private scan, tbh its worth every penny

well apparently i should be getting a call from my midwife at some point as rang my docs to arrange booking in yesterday. so perhaps can ask her what the rules are in my area. then take it from there

Try to hang on until 7+ weeks - you're more likely to see a heartbeat, and it saves all the anguish of an earlier scan when everything might be fine, it's just a bit too early. Mine was at 7+4 (I thought it was more like 8).

My private scan was £95 but I've heard of people paying as little as £50 - have a shop around on the Internet if you can't get a scan at the EPU (I couldn't)

beachesandbuckets · 17/08/2013 12:49

I had a mmc last year. When I got pregnant again, I was having cramping at 7wks and anxious so my doctor sent me for an early scan at the hospital. You can always make up a little white lie and say you have cramps, so that you don't have to pay for a private scan.

My cramping was due to.. It being twins!! Who are now 2 weeks old and healthy. Silver lining and all that...

Good luck x

fackinell · 17/08/2013 12:51

My EPAC clinic said they will at 8wks, just to put our minds at ease. Just waiting for it to happen again now...

Lovemyprincess4eva · 17/08/2013 13:02

We paid £45 for our private scan as the place had an offer on. But I also ended up having one at the EPU as I had some pains and discharge. Neither did them before 6 weeks though.
Congrats on ur pregnancy and hope all goes well x

Depends on the unit- some will and some won't. I had one this time, but this was because I had been seen in the recurrent miscarriage clinic. With my earlier pregnancy I paid for a private scan.

I agree with PPs that you should try to wait until 8 weeks as you should definitely see a HB by then, even allowing for your dates being out by a week. Saying that I had one at 6+0 and fortunately saw a HB.

hi dirtyface i to had a mc in sep 2012 anyway i fell pregnant again after about 6 months i was so anxioues and worried i spoke to my gp who did a early scan at 7 weeks and saw the heart beating then had my 12 week scan at 10 weeks lots of private clinics around to good luck :)

Auntybella · 17/08/2013 20:29

I got an NHS scan at 8 weeks after a MC but I belive that was only because the dates were unknown:- no period between miscarriage and pregnancy.

My miscarriage was at 6 weeks.

Pinkstar85 · 17/08/2013 20:47

I had a mmc at 6/7wks with my 1st PG and didn't found out til 12wk scan, I had 2 early scans with my 2nd PG. one about 7wks and one at 11. I really really couldn't wait another week til my 12wk scan. I got myself all worked up :-( I asked for both and with both I was told yes. With this PG now (I'm 7wks) I asked for one when I saw the dr and she has referred me for one, even though my 2nd PG was a healthy DS. I thought she'd say no as 2nd PG was healthy, but she didn't. I'm so glad as 12wks is so long to wait. So basically what I'm saying is, you won't know unless you ask and they should be sympathetic and give you one. Fingers crossed for you they do as I know how you feel.

No

dirtyface · 20/08/2013 09:06

aww am sorry to hear about the MC/s :(

Flowers

and glad you have got your early scan pink - when is it?

am not sure what to do now, am 5 weeks today (or poss 4 + 6) and have not heard from MW yet. so don't know whether to ring my doctor, although our doctors are notoriously shit and unhelpful

:(

hmmm i might ring the early pg unit which is where i was dealt with when i had my mc

I had an early scan today and was dated about 5-6 weeks when I thought I was 6-7.
I had a miscarriage earlier this year so was feeling super anxious and worried. The midwife told me that EPAC wouldn't do an early scan unless I'd 3 miscarriages previously Hmm so I did tell a white lie, that I'd had some bleeding. And I had actually been feeling cramping too. This persuaded her to book me in! Woo!

Rockchick1984 · 21/08/2013 07:13

Dirty ring the EPU and ask them what their policy is.

I had a MMC at 12 weeks earlier this year, as soon as I found out I was pregnant again I called them. They told me I still needed a referal from GP so to wait until I was 6/7 weeks along then see the GP and he would refer me for the scan.

I had a scan at 7 weeks, another at 9 weeks and all was good. Have my 12 week scan tomorrow, fingers crossed that goes well too :)

dirtyface · 21/08/2013 09:23

oh thats great aliyah and rockchick, so glad to hear all went ok with your scans

well i rang my GP yesterday and was told i definitely would not get an earlier scan :/ despite MCing before. so have booked a private one, i will be about 8 weeks, as they advised at least 7 or 8 weeks as before that they may not see anything. its going to cost us 200 quid, ouch. but i just cant bear to wait til 12 weeks.

tbh it sounds awful but i even thought of pretending i was bleeding but tbh i know from before how awful that is so the thought of holding up the queue for someone who really is bleeding, i just couldnt do it i dont think. plus where i live you have to go to a+e first and get passed from pillar to post for hours before they will even send you to EPU for scanning. (thats what i had to do last time)
