Self referral to midwife

Has anyone else had to refer themselves to the midwife? Basically I found out I'm pregnant on Friday. Had an appt at drs this morning and have got to refer myself to the midwife. Is this really common? I've tried to call the two numbers I've been given, have left a message for someone to call me back, but how long should I wait to chase them up? It's five weeks since my last period but I don't want to leave it too late that I can't get a scan in at the right time.

At our Dr's we have to self refer to the midwife but they won't do booking appointments before about 10 weeks. I had to push for an early one as I was high risk of ectopic pregnancy.

If you can't get through on the phone numbers, try asking at the reception of the doctors and they should be able to book you in.

Oh and HUGE congratulations :)

I think its fairly normal. I didn't see the gp with either of my pregnancies and just saw the midwife. I've got my booking in appt today for my 3rd and we live in a different area but I was still able to just go straight to the midwife.

My doctors make you self refer too. Wait a week and then phone back. My maternity unit expect you to self refer when you're six weeks pregnant so you've atill got plenty of time

It's pretty standard to self refer, you just cut out the middle man (GP) call them up give them your info and just a waiting game from there on out... Congratulations x

Yep I had to self refer too. Think its standard practice.
Congrats xx

I self referred, and in my area you can't do it until 8 weeks. They also don't arrange your dating scan until you've booked in (at 10 weeks). I think this is fairly standard, just feels like a long wait!

You have to self-refer in my area too. With my first pregnancy my doctors told me to make an appointment with the midwife for when I was 9 weeks and they could sort out a scan for a week or two after that. She said that they like to keep the booking in
appointment as close to the scan as possible because so many women miscarry early on. This time round I'm not even bothering with seeing my gp, just going straight to the midwife.

PastaBeeandCheese · 30/07/2013 14:36

I've haven't seen the GP either time. It's normal.

Congratulations!

Thanks ladies Smile feel a bit more reassured. Think I'll leave it until next week and if no answer I'll get the gp to get onto their case if I have no luck next week.
