Is baby blue only for a boy ?

Hello. We are doing up the baby room and now decided on pure white walls. Wooden flooring is already there and we bought antique/distressed chest of drawers. There is a plain wardrobe fitted in same shade as the flooring/curtain poles.
Anyway I like the shabby chic look and this is what is through the house. Like distressed rose print etc. But nothing is set in stone or very matchy. A lot of the furniture I upcycled myself and am going to do up a wicker chair etc for the room.
After looking at Ikea cots etc. I checked out local places with similar prices. Then I tried ASDA and they have a compact blue one (baby blue).
Would this be seen a boyish. The look I want is Cath Kidson type (I know it is not everyone's cup of tea) as I already have polka dot baby blue changing mat, throw (polka one side/roses on other so if I have a boy will keep in upside).

Sorry for the not very important thread. Just opinions if you have any?

The chest of drawers is off white so room will be plain and I was going to paint some wooden lettering myself.

I like blue, it's just a colour at the end of the day and your nursery sounds lovely!

Sounds good to me, you can always add other colours around the room to make it unisex.

If you like it, go for it. It's not like the baby will be bothered.

I don't see why it could only be for a boy. Especially if you go with Cath Kidston type prints. It could look very girly still.

No I am having a girl and have bought a blue pram. As hubby says the baby won't care.

I can't see anything wrong with a boy having a throw with roses on either.

Don't worry about that! Children should be surrounded by lots of colours. My DD's nursery was blue with hot air balloons in various bright colours.

My dd is 14 but I still clearly remember getting her a blue coat when she was a baby and everyone thought she was a boy. She didn't even look like a boy but hey ho..in some people's minds blue=boy every time. I like blue. I like all colours really. A mixture is preferable to me really because I just like lots of colours.

It's a nice colour, and you like it. Where are the rules that say blue is just for boys? It sounds great!

Blue was traditionally the colour for girls anyway ;)

We don't know what we are having but have bought a black and royal blue pram anyway!

Haha heidi I love blue too! Although purple is my favourite colour. mrspaddy your nursery sounds wonderful and I think you should go ahead and decorate it how you feel. I am very familiar with the Cath Kidston prints and there is no way they could be considered masculine. I think it will be lovely!

I'm currently facing a lot of gothic style babygros coming from my mum. She has seen one she loves that says "mummy's little vampire" and one that is black with lots of bats on it. Help....!?!??!?

IMHO the whole pink for girls thing is ridiculous. I dress my (female) baby in a variety of colours, have a green pram and a colourful nursery. Every time we go out she is mistaken for a boy, I don't mind of course, but am somewhat amazed by how far this pink for girls business has spread.

I went for black and white, with hints of red so that it would be unisex. I often dressed her in red too and even with bows in her hair people would refer to her as a 'he'! People can be very colourblind about babies.

I think blue shabby chic would be lovely and if you want to 'girlify' it with flowery prints then a pale blue theme with red/pink flowers sounds perfect.

Only if you take the attitude that you feel you have to conform to stereotypes of gender.

Who give a fuck what other people think? If you live your entire life doing things according to what you think other people expect you to do, then you'll miss out on so many things and drive yourself crazy trying to constantly 'do the correct thing'.

Personally I think you are ridiculous for even asking the question. Free your mind from this type of crap and just get on with living! You'll be happier for it!

That's a bit harsh, RedToothBrush! You may think the idea that it might bother people what others think is ridiculous, it doesn't make them ridiculous!

That's what a forum is for a lot of the time asking people's opinions, I personally think it is a healthy thing, doing what 'you want' and not giving a toss about others opinions can also be thought of quite selfish.

Just because you are interested in opinions of others does not mean you are necessarily going to take it up, it just helps to gain another alternative.

To label someone as 'ridiculous' when you don't even know them Is very sad I'm afraid.

It will be lovely. Ignore the labels and choose the things you like.

I think it's sounds lovely. If you like retro/ cath kidson and are crafty you could make some really nice rose print bunting ( blues/ pinks/ greens) and put above cot or some nice art work incorporating light blue with other colours
