Private 12 week scan in place of NHS? Problems later on!

Has anyone been in this position?

For various reasons, I am having a 12 week scan done privately next week. I will not be having any further private scans after this.

I have just got my NHS scan date through, which is a week or so later.

Is it possible for me to simply pass on all the notes from the private scan to the other hospital, then have the 20 week scan as normal there in due course, or will this cause administrative problems for the NHS hospital?

It seems silly to take up an appointment that I do not really need, but equally I do not want to fall off the system.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Ah I did this. Nhs scan wasn't arranged in time and I was getting nervous so went for private scan at 11+4 then got called in for nhs scan at 12+3. I went to both because I wanted to be in the nhs system and it was lovely to see the baby again. Maybe a little bit cheeky but it worked out well for us. Interesting to note that we got different odds of downs syndrome with the different scans. Good luck and many congratulations. Xx

No they will expect you to have both scans at the NHS hospital if you want to have NHS treatment, this is so you are in their system and compare growth etc at the 20 week scan, they will also want to have a record on their system of blood results etc if you are having combined screening done.

At least you get to see baby twice!

I had both too. I enjoyed my scans so the more the merrier IMO.

Great! I shall have both with a clear conscience, then.

I had a scan at 7.5 weeks (bleeding), and then it was just a blob with a heartbeat. Can't wait to see a 'real' baby.

Why do you not want a 20 week scan?

Bunbaker · 15/06/2013 08:19

Sorry, I misread you post. Ignore my question Smile

They may 'expect' you to have both scans at an NHS hospital if you want NHS treatment, but since having a scan in the first place is voluntary they cannot require you to do so.

I don't know about having the 12 week private and the 20 NHS, but I had both scans privately with DD2. I had had an appalling time with DD1's labour and felt tense and stressed even setting foot in that hospital again. Plus you always wait hours at my hospital, and with DD1 and work, I just wasn't willing to waste the time again.

One midwife gave me a bit of a lecture, but I handed over the full file of scan information (this was after the 12 week scan) and asked her what was missing. She couldn't say anything. She then said they 'liked' to have done it themselves, but I politely and firmly said that wasn't happening and the subject was dropped.

in both my pregnancies I have had the 12 week scan done privately. With DD I then had 20 week scan under NHS with no issues as the paperwork from the Birth Company is so comprehensive there were no issues. For this pregnancy I've had both 12 and 20 week scans done privately and again there have been no issues. Entirely your choice.

I had a private scan at 11 ish weeks, an nhs scan at 14+3 (hence I booked a private one!) and an NHS scan at 20 weeks. My mw had no issue with private scan (although why would she?!) but did advise me not to put the private scan notes in my folder in case they sent me away at the hospital when I turned up for my 12 week scan.

See your baby as often as you can!

Madamecastafiore · 15/06/2013 10:08

I had a 10 and 12 week private scan and will be having private and nhs 20 week scan.

Private notes went into NHS file, midwife was very impressed by the detail and said I could have also had had a 12 week scan on nhs as well as private.

With DS I had a private nuchal scan as they didn't offer on NHS back then. Did the normal dating one with the NHS too.

The private scan put me at an EDD 2 weeks before the NHS. But NHS wanted to stick to their date. DS was born 4 days after NHS date.

I would personally do the scan to ensure you are in the system.

Good luck and enjoy seeing your baby!
