Help - pregnant and used permanent hair dye

At 15 weeks pregnant I used a 'home box' permanent hair dye, and the dye was in contact with my scalp, because I didn't use foils or anything. I've since learned that this may not have been advisable, so I'm now in such a panic that I may have harmed my baby that I've cried for days. Are there any other mums who have used permanent hair dye (not highlights) whilst pregnant - hopefully with no ill effects?

It's absolutely fine. You may be slightly more sensitive to dye a d more likely to have an allergic reaction during pregnancy which is why caution is advised. It won't have done anything at all to your baby.

The fumes could be harmful during first ten weeks, and they advise caution for the remainder of your pregnancy in case your changed hormones cause you to react differently to the chemicals. Recently had my hair dyed professionally and both midwife and hairdresser reassured me it was okay.

Dry your eyes and enjoy your fab new hair colour to go with your fab new bump :)

It'll be fine. fine fine fine fine fine.

You may have reacted differently to the dye, but it was fine. You didn't puff up like a pufferfish, you are fine.

I'm jumping on this bandwagon too as I'm also curious about this. I have a grey streak at the front which I hate! From what I've read people advise not dyeing for the first trimester (so you should be fine PennyN!) and from then on try and make sure you're in a ventilated area. It seems to be the fumes people are concerned about rather than the dye coming into contact with the scalp, although as others have said it seems to be fine.

Frustrating as my hair seems to be growing about twice as fast since I've been pg so my roots are horrendous and I'm only 6 weeks! I don't want to look like a granny in the baby pics, I'm only 33!

I'm a hairdresser, permanent hairdye-usually number 5 below (dark to black) used over yrs and yrs is linked to bladder cancer-it's the melonin-colour pigment. Using dye through your pregnancy is a personal choice there's nothing to say its bad and nothing to say its fine. I advise my clients that its a personal preference but to be aware that hormones could give you a skin reaction or make the colour take differently-as in go too extreme or not take at all, for what's its worth I'm 28+3 and have been blonde now brunette!!!

nhs says its ok but that you may prefer to wait until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy

ilovepowerhoop · 21/01/2013 17:24

p.s. I dyed my hair in both pregnancies

cupcake78 · 21/01/2013 18:04

It's fine, I've dyed my hair during 2 pregnancies.

The colour was a bit brighter than expected but it was still all ok.

iamwhaticallpregnant · 21/01/2013 19:39

it is absolutely fine - I asked my midwife - she said the only thing that could be harmful is perming hair cause of the solution.
Dont worry. I have died my hair 3 times during it x x x

shelly81 · 21/01/2013 21:38

I dyed mine friday & alls well here :-) I'm 23 weeks xx

LittleMissSnowShine · 22/01/2013 12:55

I need to dye mine next week and was wondering what to do...thanks for your answers!

birdofthenorth · 23/01/2013 18:57

It's fine. Old wives tale!

PennyN · 24/01/2013 08:44

Thanks for your replies! I've read (and re-read) the NHS link - phew! Then I also found some advice in the mumsnet pregnancy do's and don'ts - which seems reassuring:

"It's fine to colour your hair during pregnancy. Only enormous doses of the chemicals used in semi-permanent and permanent hair dyes would cause your baby harm."
www.mumsnet.com/pregnancy/dos-and-donts

So then I asked my midwife (granted it might have been better to have asked her beforehand and avoided all this worry). She clearly thought I was bonkers, not for dyeing my hair, but for worrying about it, and said its fine - loads of her pregnant ladies dye their hair.

So that'll do me; I'll try to relax now!
