Symptoms of ectopic pregnancy different??

Hi all.

I'm asking on behalf of a good friend of mine. She's a bit worried and a bit of a hypochondriac at that!

5 weeks ago she had a contraception accident and went to get the morning after poll the very next day. One week later she came on her period which has lasted 3 weeks.

In the last week she has been getting very sore boobs like she did when pregnant with DC1 and has been getting short sharp pains in the left side of lower abdomen.

Now she's worried that she could be having an ectopic pregnancy as apparently you can still have a period with them. I'm not so sure however.....plus she says that with the morning after pill there is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancies. Is this true?

I said she should just go to the GP. Has anyone else got any advice?

No advice really but has she done a pregnancy test? If she is pregnant then it might be worth speaking to the GP if she's still concerned.

Northey · 20/08/2012 15:49

I had a heavy "period" with what turned out to be an ectopic last year. And I just had a second ectopic 5 days ago for which I had no bleeding at all.

It's a bit of an obvious question, but has she actually done a pregnancy test?

Flossie MAP doesn't increase the chance of an ectopic, but it isn't as effective as preventing ectopic pregnancies as it is as prevent uterine pregnancies. Agree with the others saying to take a pregnancy test, and if it is positive, and she has had bleeding and abdominal pain, she should get a referral to an early pregnancy clinic. If she feels very unwell, go to A&E.
If the test is negative, and her period was roughly when she was expecting it, I'd guess she just had a stomach cramp, but still worth visiting a health professional if she is worried.

Northey So sorry to hear you've suffered a second ectopic. That was my greatest fear on getting pregnant again. I assume you have found the ectopic pregnancy trust

Northey · 20/08/2012 16:05

Thanks, nextphase. I found them v helpful the first time, and will probably look again in the next few days, but am still reeling a bit at the moment (surgery was late on Thursday night). I just can't believe that it really has happened again.

Flosie1989 · 20/08/2012 16:13

Thanks for the advice. No she hasn't done a pregnancy test as we were only talking about it earlier. I'll tell her to just go and get one tomorrow.

I'm so sorry Northey for your ectopic pregnancies. It really must be awful. Wishing you the best in your recovery.

Ah, thanks, flosie. I'll survive :) They managed to save the tube this time, so we'll see how it heals and then see what we can do next.

Yes, a preg test is definitely the first thing she needs to do.

nextphase · 20/08/2012 16:35

Can you get the test to her tonight, so she can do it with the first wee of the day - it gets a better result, as the hormone level is higher, having accumulated over night.

Northey fingers crossed your tube heals nicely, and you sail through your next pregnancy, if you have the strength to try again.

Flosie1989 · 20/08/2012 17:34

Thank you. I'll suggest that to her now Smile

I've had 2 ectopics. First was 12 weeks post miscarriage (i was 10 weeks pregnant) and I'd 2 normal periods I thought I was just having severe period pains they came and went for about 12 hours and then I felt like I was in labour resulted in emergency surgery. 2nd ectopic I knew I was pregnant and thought I was miscarrying as no pain. I'd advise get it checked out first think if she's pregnant and having pains. I was going to go home and take pain killers luckily my colleague insisted she take me to my gp. Dr would rather u be over cautious

iloveberries · 20/08/2012 21:30

Sorry to hijack the thread but just wanted to let northy know there's an ectopic support thread in pregnancy loss section including others who've been through the horror twice.

Thinking of you.

Op as others say she should get herself to the docs if she is testing positive and is worried.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 20/08/2012 21:34

hi flosie, good advice from the others, best to get it checked out. You can bleeding that seems like a period when you have an EP, sometimes the blood is brown, but it wasn't particularly brown with mine.

Northey, so sorry to hear you've had another, I remember you from the horrible time during/after my EP, you were very kind. Hope you heal quickly, good news they were on the ball and saved the tube.

Loopy, sorry to hear you've been through it too. Having 2 losses in a row like that is so hard. I had a similar experience.

Flosie1989 · 21/08/2012 06:18

Morning ladies.

She's just text me saying that she's done a test this morning and it's negative. So I assume it was just a very long heavy period which was maybe caused by taking the morning after pill?

Thanks again for all your advice. In sorry to hear your stories of EP's I can't imagine what it must be like. Keep trying and hopefully one day you'll get a special little bundle xx

Excellent news, flosie. Sounds like all is ok there, then. If she has any residual concerns, make sure she knows what to look out for (pelvic and shoulder tip pain, and "prune juice" coloured bleeding are a few things). But really I think she is in the clear :)

Thanks, berries, I know the thread you mean but have never posted on it. I think this time I might, though, especially if there are some other repeat-performers on there.

tas, I remember your EP so well and was so sorry for you. I think it was quite soon after mine, so I just really empathised with it all. How are you getting on now? Did I see somewhere that you were pregnant again ?

tasmaniandevilchaser · 22/08/2012 21:11

hi northey, I'm mostly ok, still a bit rubbish sometimes but getting better, thanks. No, sadly not pg. Though DD keeps going "I'm nearly a big sister". Hopefully she has some psychic ability Grin, bizarrely she did tell me I was pg with the EP, "mummy you got a baby coming in your tummy" before I had even done a test. Spooky! See you on the EP Thread.

iloveberries · 26/08/2012 14:57

tas your dd must actually have some kind of psychic gift!! Sshhhpoooooky!
