Large Nuchal Translucency at first scan :'( Who else has been through this?

11 weeks and measuring 3.8 We went from the happiest couple in the world to anxious, depressed and crying in the space of an afternoon. What are our chances of a healthy baby? We still haven't told either of our parents because we were waiting for the scan to show everything was all right. Sad Now what? Just looking at the picture of little baby with he big halo round the neck and head makes my heart break.

Thank you all for the best wishes and support. I really appreciate it. We managed to keep ourselves pretty busy for the weekend but being at work is hard. It's tricky to concentrate. We're having another scan this week to see if there's been any change and we have a heart scan booked in in a couple of weeks. The rest of the results from the CVS ought to back by then so we should know mostly the full story towards the end of the month. I'm very confused about the difference between a large nuchal translucency and all this extra fluid around the back but I can't quite seem to get a straight answer from anybody about it. ARC were pretty negative. They said I couldn't trust people saying they had healthy babies after scans like mine because those people wouldn't know if their seemingly healthy baby had latent health problems Shock That really took the wind out of me because all the medical information I've read says that a large nuchal does not definitely mean there is something wrong. I guess we just have to wait and hope.

I thought people like ARC were supposed to be supportive and help you deal with things as positively as possible Hmm. Really sorry you've had that experience with them, BTO. We will look after you here, and be thinking of you, and waiting to hear how you get on..

Amazing news! We had another scan this week, because it was already booked and... the extra fluid around baby's body has completely cleared! Shock In less than a week. Even the Nuchal Translucency is down to under 2mm Grin. I can hardly believe it. It's like a miracle. I feel like I've got my baby back. If this had been my first scan (and it's still in the right date range for the Nuchal scan), we'd never have know there was anything to worry about. We've still got the rest of the CVS results to come in and we still have the fetal cardiac scan and anomaly scan to get through but somehow I feel like everything is going to be all right. I've fallen in love with my baby all over again and enjoying the pregnancy once more. Thank you all so much for your support through what has been a very difficult time. And I wish the very best of luck to anyone going through the uncertainty of soft indicators and further tests. Will keep you posted on the further results to come. Really hoping it's just a formality now. Smile

Wow what amazing news - I hope it's all plain sailing for you now!

Also hope this is also inspiration for people in similar circumstances to not lose hope x

Wow! I've been lurking and keeping an eye out for this thread. Really pleased for you. Congratulations and fingers crossed for the rest of your tests xxxx

Hiya, well I said I'd keep you updated and... the full chromosome results are clear! So incredibly happy. We still have the fetal heart scan next week and may have to have more of those. Plus the anomoly scan is booked for September so everything is in place but we're expecting good results. Perhaps we shouldn't be so blindly optimistic but we can't help it now Smile Was starting to get very worried again with the long wait for the full CVS results but really happy now. Only slight fly in the ointment was that the midwife who called me did not seem particularly impressed, at all in fact, that the fluid had disappeared so quickly. I guess it's cos they have to be careful about what they say. Anyway, we think it's a brilliant sign and to know that the chromosomes are all okay for certain is a HUGE relief. Thanks again for everyone for reading and helping me out with this with best wishes and support. Agree, Katie I hope other people can take a bit of hope from my story so far, if going through a similar situation. I'll repeat what I've said in other threads, a large nuchal does not definitely mean there is a problem. Smile

New to the thread, but incredibly happy for you after reading what you've been through. Think your DH should have another large whiskey later! Grin

katiecubs · 18/08/2012 08:29

So so pleased for you! Have an amazing worry free weekend Grin

Purplefan · 19/08/2012 20:56

Hi Beattheodds - just checked in to see all you fab news. Hope the rest of the pregnancy is worry free and all the best with your baby! x

BeatTheOdds · 31/08/2012 12:13

First heart scan okay, no major abnormalities Smile I was crying on the way in because I was suddenly terrified, and crying on the way out as I was so relieved! Not sobs you understand, but tears rolling with the emotion. I'm relaxed and confident at the moment. But then I'll probably get another wave of anxiety before the anomaly and the final heart scan later!
Thank you to everyone who has been posting. I will keep the thread updated until our little one arrives, because I found other people's stories on the web to be so comforting during the darkest moments of this whole experience.

I am so, so happy for you. I have my 12 week scan tomorrow and am terrified (as I guess everyone is) but it's so great to hear that even if things show up as abnormal, it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. Wishing you all the very best for the future :)

newbie6 · 31/08/2012 17:18

Congrats BeatTheOdds, wishing you a happy, healthy pregnancy :) x

BeatTheOdds · 04/09/2012 14:56

Thanks ladies, Phoenixrose314 I hope the scan went well (feel free to PM if any problems, but I expect it was all fine.)

Dear @BeatTheOdds, I know it’s been years, but I followed your story with excitement... I wondered how it all was with the arrival of the baby? Thank you
