I'm 29 weeks pregnant and for the past 8 weeks I have been OBSESSED with sponges. Kitchen scourers, bathroom ones, facial ones... I even went along to Tesco specifically to look at the sponge section.

I know it sounds ridicuous, but I ADORE the smell of them and also the texture in my mouth.

I hadn't actually EATEN any of the sponge until tonight, in the shower where the urge became too much and I took a little bite.

Oh god, thinking about it now is making my mouth water!!!!

Have I gone completely insane? (I feel like it!)

Shock That's a new one on me! Not unusual to have funny cravings when pg, of course - they are supposed to indicate some sort of deficiency that your body is trying to make up for. But sponge?? Can't work that one out.

I hope no-one's used it to wash their bum! Could be caused by a lack of iron though, get it checked out.

Emmiedarling · 25/07/2012 21:46

Ah. I do have iron deficiancy. I had thought about bringing it up with the MW before, but I felt stupid so kept it to myself! Will speak to her tomorrow...

It's a funny old world isn't it? Hope you get it sorted

Cheekychops84 · 25/07/2012 21:51

Omg how funny! Was gonna post this the other day but was a bit Blush I've not eaten it but I love to chew on it and I'm now obsessed with my sponge ! When I see them in the shop now I have to buy them ! Loooooove my spooooonge!!!!!

EatingSwansHorror · 25/07/2012 21:52

I chewed sponge and my hair. Also ice. And could not get enough of the smell of shoe express and the texture of contract carpets (like in offices and surgeries) and would scratch them for hours. As a result my dd is perfectly normal and cravings went almost as soon as he was born. Never anaemic either.

BlackOutTheSun · 25/07/2012 21:55

I ate chalk Grin and kept sniffing dettol even kept a bottle in my handbag and bathe in it

PricklyPickle · 25/07/2012 21:56

Bum sponge! Oh how i laughed Grin

It is your absolute duty as a pregnant lady to do crazy things. It makes the rest of us feel better when we're reading mumsnet whilst secretly chewing on a flannel.

Moshlingmummy · 25/07/2012 21:57

I used to like biting things when I was pg with ds, our baby name book had teeth marks all the way round the outside by the time he was born. I just had this urge to bite Blush

Cheekychops84 · 25/07/2012 22:04

Lol it's quite embarrassing tbh ! Admitting how a sponge becomes your one and only obsession lol and yes I jus chew mine I'm
Not sharing it even with my bum Grin I'm not anaemic either ? My sister used to like dettol and bleach she used to lick the lids lol

Emmiedarling · 25/07/2012 22:08

HAHA it's not my bum sponge ;)

I have three in the shower at the moment - all perfectly clean. Hehe.

Oooh I'm glad there are others around with a similar craving - I thought i actually had lost the plot.

Now PricklyPickle - a flannel hey? Don't tempt me! sounds more and more appealing the more I think about it!

Oooh sucking flannels was a craving with dc1, coconut shower gel with dd I'd foam it all up and eat the bubbles. So far I'm sane with dc3, 18+4 so I still have time Grin

I've loved crunching ice with all 3 Blush

Ambrosius · 25/07/2012 22:23

My mum used to cut up hot water bottles and chew them Confused

Emmiedarling · 25/07/2012 22:30

HAHA! Hot water bottles - oooh no. Can't imagine doing that.

I've also been eating ice. Lots of it. But I'm blaming that on the heat.

yep i ate sponge perfectly reasonable

msrantsalot · 25/07/2012 22:32

and ice. but the ice cubes had to be only partially frozen so they were crispy

LBsBongers · 25/07/2012 22:33

Sponges are good, treat yourself to your own pack

Viviennemary · 25/07/2012 22:36

I nibbled blackboard chalk. But only in very tiny amounts.

PeshwariNaan · 25/07/2012 22:38

This could be pica - talk to your midwife!

Ariel24 · 25/07/2012 22:51

This wax on this morning a couple of months ago, a girl who started eating sponges when pregnant and then couldn't stop! Definitely speak to midwife!

picnicbasketcase · 25/07/2012 22:52

So glad my only craving was ice cold water. not keen on the idea of having eaten sponges and leather Confused

LeafySuburbs · 25/07/2012 22:53

I was anaemic in one pregnancy and never had the urge to eat anything odd. Or anything at all, really.

I think you should speak to your MW.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/07/2012 22:53

I once spoke to a woman who rang labour ward up and asked me if it was ok to eat firelighters as she had a craving for them! Noooooo.
