Can I eat parma ham if it's on a pizza?

So, tonight I fancy pizza for dinner.

We quite often used to make our own with this gluten free packet mix that we have and it's really very yummy. However the "only" way I like to eat it is with a tomato base, parma ham and mozerella cheese.

I know that parma ham is on the no-go list, but if it's cooked in the oven for long enough to burn the roof of my mouth to make it very hot, is it then OK?

If its cooked I believe it's fine. I ate Parma ham that way while pg. They worry around it is because it's raw and cured rather than cooked.

Now I fancy a Parma ham pizza! :o

I'm thinking now that I can't wait until dinner and want one RIGHT NOW!!

I've just had an early lunch of a bacon butty. Nearest thing I have to Parma ham!

I've always eaten Parma ham throughout all my pregnancies. My friend was admitted to hospital in Italy with gestational diabetes and they gave her Parma ham as part of her lunch so I don't think it can be that bad if it's offered on a maternity ward.

New guidance from NHS is that parma ham is fine in pregnancy. See link below.

All cured meats and fish seem to be ok now (inc smoked salmon etc)
I personally have a craving for parma harm!
They also seem to have relaxed the rules on cheese - feta, parmesan (which is unpasturised) and mozzarella all ok

I eat Parma ham if it's cooked. We have had a lot of pizza with my favourite banned ingredients. Yummy chorizo or blue cheese. As long as its cooked really well it's fine.

Imperfectionist · 25/05/2012 14:34

I've eaten raw Parma ham throughout pregnancies, and sushi as well. The later I only eat very fresh, though I eat supermarket Parma ham. It's not on the banned list.

monkeymoma · 25/05/2012 19:42

according to the NHS website which is already linked you can eat raw parma ham, doesn't even ened to be cooked,

wish I could say the same for goats cheese, which is the only pizza I like Sad but apparently as a pizza topping it doesn't get cooked quite as much as it would in a bake so its still no for me :-(

thereistheball · 25/05/2012 21:16

I drove through Parma a week ago. My fridge is stuffed with Parma ham, and a vast wedge of Parmesan. I am in food heaven.

Monkeymoma - I found using feta as a goats' cheese substitute worked during my last pregnancy. Now I just eat goats' cheese too. Today I had it for lunch on granary toast with fried mushrooms - delicious!

monkeymoma · 25/05/2012 21:20

nope have been substituting feta but it isn't hitting the spot, proper rotting goats chees with rind is what I want! mmmmm

mrswee · 25/05/2012 23:21

Goats cheese is safe when cooked, so fine on a pizza.

Superene · 25/05/2012 23:26

If the whole world followed the NHS guidelines, there would be no French people. Or many Italians either for that matter.

VegemiteSandwich · 26/05/2012 10:13

If it's not on the banned-foods-list, then I wonder why I've got it in my head that I shouldn't eat it.

I'd forgotten that I like feta on pizza too ... right, sending the husband down to the shops off to the shops to buy parma ham and feta cheese! Woo hoo, yum lunch for me today :)

startail · 26/05/2012 10:23

Rosa · 26/05/2012 10:40

THis part Italian was banned parma ham / salami etc for 9 mths..... Mind you I was banned a few more things than in the UK.....

monkeymoma · 26/05/2012 22:18

"Goats cheese is safe when cooked, so fine on a pizza"

I've read up on it and it is not considered to have cooked thoroughly on a pizza, it's just heated a bit, goats cheese is fine in a baked tart but not pizza

Superene, quite a few posters from france have confirmed that brie/blue cheese is not considered okay in pregnancy over there either, it sounds like their advice is more consistant with here than some people assume, if anything it is stricker re cats

3babessoon · 13/08/2021 15:27

Where does it say that? The NHS link says you can’t eat cured meats?
